Why is it OK that my coat is covered in dog slobber and paw prints?

I went for a long walk in the woods yesterday.

I don't dislike dogs, I smile I indulgently at owners with cute dogs, but why do so many owners think it's OK to have their dogs come and jump up at me or slobber on me?. It must be awful for anyone scared of dogs. During my day out, I must have had at least 8 dogs make physical contact with me.

I've just gone to put my coat in and it's filthy.

People who can't control their dogs shouldn't have them off lead. Really pisses me off and gives everyone a bad name

No responsible dog owner thinks this is ok

Irresponsible dog owners with poorly trained dogs are not going to come on to this thread to say that their dog does it and they’re ok with it

But we could play some MN dog bingo:

  • too many lockdown dogs
  • dogs are horrible / smelly / don’t know why anyone likes them
  • some sort of slagging off off poo mixes (bonus points for calling them mongrels)

Etc etc etc

Overthebow · 13/12/2021 11:12

It’s not ok. The dogs should be on a leas if they can’t be stopped jumping up. Why do some owners let their dogs do this?

From my experience yesterday though it really isn't a minority. The weather wasn't good here yesterday, I didn't see that many people!

It's bad owners, my dd always gets dogs jumping up at her pram and licking her face. Luckily she loves dogs but I still think it's disgusting.

Nevertime · 13/12/2021 11:21

Hmm. Yes well I suppose "bad" owners is the obvious answer, but there seem to be an awful lot of people who don't realise others don't want their "just being friendly" dogs all over them.

They do realise they just don’t care because they’re dicks

I'm not scared of dogs but I once had a very large dog jump at me and almost push me down a ravine

pastypirate · 13/12/2021 11:25

I have a dog. I never allow him to touch strangers unless they invite him too. That's awful owner behaviour. Yanbu

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 13/12/2021 11:26

There are just a lot of people who don't know how to control their dogs

RunningFromInsanity · 13/12/2021 11:27

It’s strange because only on MN does it happen at this scale.
I go on regular 3+hour walks around a very popular area and I may have had a few dogs come over and sniff me but 8 dogs jumping up on one walk?

Nevertime · 13/12/2021 11:28

8 dogs in a day long walk. Yes

I was thinking the same thing. I am 35 and have never once had a random dog jump up on me on a walk but 8 times in one walk? I would suggest you check your pockets for sausages op.
tootyfruitypickle · 13/12/2021 11:30

My neighbours dog does this and it always annoyed me but I tried to smile and be polite. It's also quite bitey which is not nice. And it's not a pup. Now I have my own dog I won't tolerate it and even when alone I don't say hello to her dog. It's not ok!!

I never have dogs run or jump up me either. It's rare even they bother my dog. Though that sometimes does happen
Helpstopthepain · 13/12/2021 11:31

We don’t let ours jump, he’s kept on a lead (really bad recall and can be an arsehole) and warn anyone that wants to make a fuss of him that he gets excited and jumps up.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 13/12/2021 11:31

I'm a cat person but still pretty toleramt of dogs, I don't mind playing with the neighbours dog, he like the garden hose but quite honestly there are so many really badly behaved dogs out there and some of them....my cat is better trained.

This!

MindyStClaire · 13/12/2021 11:32

YANBU - had this during the first lockdown, dog jumped up and put its paws on my 36 week bump, owner nowhere to be seen.

Does my head in.

rrhuth · 13/12/2021 11:33

I had two really fucking annoying and dirt-depositing dog interactions in one park, then the following week none. So it is a very variable thing.

There are far too many badly-trained dogs and stupid owners. Also too many people who themselves are responsible side with dogs over people.

Looking forward greatly to the extra lockdown dogs being fully adult and badly-handled over the next decade.

TangerineDreams · 13/12/2021 11:35

I love dogs but I absolutely HATE when they're not under control. There's no excuse. Either you're too bone idle to train your dog or your dog is an untrainable arse of a pooch and therefore needs to remain on a lead.

I got to the point of telling a neighbour that if I found her dog loose on the farm again (she had a cottage on the grounds) and it jumped up on me I'd kick the fucking thing over the fence. (It was a Westie, I could have launched that fucker quite a ways) and I also reminded her that loose dogs on a farm around livestock can legally be shot. And we have guns.
To be fair, it was on me almost daily and my work uniform would be muddy before I even got to my car. This last time (with the threats) I was heading out to a friends funeral in my best outfit and wasn't in the mood for quietly raging to myself about it.

Now if a dog runs up to me I put a hand out and firmly and loudly say, "NO!" Before it gets to me. Most dogs are at least trained just enough to stop in their tracks at that.

WhatDidISayAlan · 13/12/2021 11:36

The worst one I had (pathetic, really, but it really annoyed me!) was when I’d just moved back to my home town into a run down renovation project I’d reluctantly inherited. Moved back from a rented flat in London with no car, no washer, just an old fridge, and very little furniture. I’d lugged two IKEA bags of clean washing back from the launderette that day and was wearing a clean pair of jeans as I headed out to get the train into town to meet a friend. Took a short cut through the park and a massive (very friendly) German Shepard jumped up all over me and left muddy skiddy paw prints all down my thighs! I almost cried.

FOJN · 13/12/2021 11:39

I agree, I believe it does happen but I have a dog and walk him for mile's and hours every week and this almost never happens and I live in an area where dog ownership almost seems compulsory there are so many of them. There are only two dogs who ever jump up at me, I know both of them and have previously given them treats, nearly all other dogs ignore me. My dog never approaches random strangers.

oklets · 13/12/2021 11:39

Completely agree. I do think it's mostly 'bad' owners who think you should be flattered and delighted by it. I love dogs myself (although don't love dirty paw prints all over my clothes) but my 2 year old is now pretty scared of them because of this happening repeatedly. I've had massive dogs come up and lick his face, resulting in terrified screaming. The owners response? Laughing and saying 'oh don't worry, he was just giving you a kiss darling'... Idiots.

Yup. 3yo loved dogs when she was in the buggy, has hated them ever since she's been out and walking.
