Op tomorrow, what's the chances of it being cancelled?

Having a moment with myself.

Am due an op tomorrow to have a spinal stimulator fitted. I have got it in to my head that I'm going to get a call in the morning to say it's not happening due to all the omicron mess.

I'm in at 11, it's not a long op and done in day surgery.

I'm nervous about having it done, nervous about not having it done so can't win really.

What do you recon the chances of it still going ahead are?!

90% think it’s on

pianolessons1 · 12/12/2021 19:26

If you won't need an ITU bed should be fine. That's the limiting factor

Wrongaddress · 12/12/2021 19:27

98% still on

Fallagain · 12/12/2021 19:27

As long as the surgeon is well then I think it will be fine.

lucascriesalot · 12/12/2021 19:28

Why do you think it might be cancelled? Have they told you it could be? If so they should have informed you by now.

ChristmasTreeBee · 12/12/2021 19:28

I’ve got an op Tuesday, part of me wants them to phone & cancel another part wants to get it done before Christmas

I’m pretty sure it will go ahead

Iamanicepersonreally · 12/12/2021 19:30

If you don't need an ITU bed, then it'll probably go ahead. I hope it goes well.

Depends on your hospital, but I've been in and out of mine last few weeks as inpatient and it's fairly calm - doesn't feel very different to a normal winter.

A lot of messaging in the media now is preparedness and trying to shift people's behaviour rather than that things are already in a crisis.

ftw163532 · 12/12/2021 19:31

Pretty much everybody gets nervous about surgery, even without pandemic worries - don't beat yourself up about it.

Hope it goes well.

I read an awful post recently by someone whose job it is to call people on the morning of long awaited ops to tell them they are cancelled for covid reasons

She said they sometimes literally find out in the morning. Obvioulsy I dont know if all hospitals are the same but it's a terrible situation for all involved.

I manage surgical services in my trust. We are not expecting any announcements to stop doing routine work. The risk of the nhs shutting up shop is vanishing small. We have been operating every week since August 2020. The biggest risk to your surgery going ahead is bed availability and theatres staffing. We do have some cases at risk tomorrow in my hospital, due to staffing. My team called the patients on Friday and advised them to still attend as planned but advised there is a chance their ops wont go ahead.

If we have to cancel some surgeries we review the clinical priority and waiting times of all patients to minimise the impact.

I am sure you will be fine.

DD is due fairly major neurosurgery on Thursday and I'm crapping myself that it might be cancelled. We've been isolating for 3 weeks to make sure she doesn't get COVID.

Her mental health (and mine) won't take a postponement.

Fingers crossed all these ops go ahead

Sugarplumfairy65 · 12/12/2021 20:03

I had my cancer surgery cancelled twice earlier this year. It was only one night in hospital but they were short of theatre and recovery room staff because they'd been seconded to Covid wards

anotherdaynotanotherdollar · 12/12/2021 22:00

Thank you - let's hope I don't get a call first thing. I just need to hitch the big girl pants round my arse and crack on either way!

Just to update: I had it done today hurry! Very sore currently but unbelievably I already have less leg and foot pain so so far I'm elated!

Hope those waiting for ops also get them done!

FWIW day surgery cases are usually less likely to get cancelled as they don't need a bed, which is most commonly the limiting factor. Obviously if there are staff shortages that can cause problems, but beds is the most common problem hence more major ops getting cancelled.

CovidCorvid · 13/12/2021 17:25

I had my operation cancelled 5x in 2 years. Was meant to have it done the day before the first lockdown. Each time I got at least a days notice.

CovidCorvid · 13/12/2021 17:25

Sorry. Seen the update. Glad it went ahead.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/12/2021 17:28

Day surgery is less likely to be cancelled.

FlibbertyGiblets · 13/12/2021 17:51

So.pleased you have had your operation. .
