How do you hear your reading?

So, when I read, I literally hear myself reading in my head. I put on different character voices etc.

DH has told me that when he reads, he hears nothing?! He doesn't like reading (don't blame him if he hears nothing).

What about everyone else?!

I hear me but in a slightly posher voice. Like someone from a period drama. Don't know why.

Dizzywizz · 12/12/2021 14:28

Well I don’t ‘hear’ me reading, as it’s inside my head iyswim?

PriamFarrl · 12/12/2021 14:29

I hear fiction like an audiobook and factual text, like a bill or the like as just words. But if I want to read fiction more quickly then I read it like a letter.

MatildaIThink · 12/12/2021 14:30

I don't hear a voice either, I read and process the words.

DustyMaiden · 12/12/2021 14:31

Like watching TV. The scene, the characters.

Bratnews · 12/12/2021 14:32

I don’t hear anything I just see the words and they make sense. Normally looking at a group at a time - makes faster reading!

Avarua · 12/12/2021 14:36

I get the full BBC Radio drama effect inside my head when I read silently. I'm an expressive reader out loud. My kids love me reading to them but I'm probably pretty annoying to adults 😁

Avarua · 12/12/2021 14:37

Academic texts, I read very fast and don't 'hear' anything. I scan for the conclusion and the method.

minipie · 12/12/2021 14:38

I don’t hear anything. I read faster than I talk so not sure how hearing it in my head would work… would it sound like it was on fast forward?

MrsTophamHat · 12/12/2021 14:40

Sometimes I hear myself but better spoken as pp have said. Other times, such as when reading Dickens for instance, I have a different narrative voice.

TulipsGarden · 12/12/2021 14:45

I don't hear anything, I see groups of words and understand them all together. I read very fast, especially when reading fiction.

My DP (who hates reading) reads at speaking pace in his head. I don't know how anyone can read that slowly!

SaveUs3rname · 12/12/2021 15:15

This is so interesting!
I read with my eyes flitting ahead so the speed the voice moves in my head is just like a normal speaking voice.
I cannot get my ahead around how someone could read words and not actually hear them in their head. It's amazing isn't it!

I'm sure it does make fast reading, however I can also skim read. Probably relatively slowly compare to some of you though!

I hear my own voice.

However, when reading Goodnight Mister Tom, I hear John Thaw's voice doing Mister Tom's bits.

MartyHart · 12/12/2021 21:06

I hear my voice too, I'm hearing it now while I'm typing as well.
I read very fast but my voice doesn't sound like it's speaking any faster than normal.

EightWheelGirl · 12/12/2021 21:10

I don’t hear anything. I’m usually visualising what’s being described.

WingBingo · 12/12/2021 21:14

I read too fast to be able to do that.

Interesting to learn it’s not the case for for everyone.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 12/12/2021 21:18

Interesting - I do not hear voices not even my own when I am reading and I love reading.

I do not see pictures when I hear a word either (unlike DD who does) - I see the written word. My spelling is better. Grin

ItoldyouIwastrouble · 12/12/2021 21:32

I hear my own voice but news artcles/ autobiographies or books by authors I know, I hear in their voices. I can't switch it off so have had to stop reading some things if it's in a voice I don't like!

35andThriving · 18/12/2021 13:21

I can't imagine not heaeing a voice in my head when I read.

GingerbreadandJellytots · 18/12/2021 13:25

I read at speaking pace, can't read anything faster than that. It's why academia was not for me. I enjoy reading non fiction and fiction, with fiction I tend to have a 'picture' in my head and voice over like in some films

DanglingMod · 18/12/2021 13:29

Your OP and others' responses explain why some people read so much more slowly than me! I just sort of look at text and absorb it into my brain. It wouldn't be possible to do that with an internal voice!

CornedBeef451 · 18/12/2021 13:33

With fiction I don't hear anything, the story just happens in my mind. I do read very quickly though and sort of in chunks rather than word by word.

Non fiction tends to be slower but I still don't hear a voice.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/11/2022 01:01

Ooh I'm going to have to ask DH who reads at lightening speed. I think I read fairly quickly but def have a voice. Even typing this my brain voice is verbalising it. I couldn't imagine what my brain voice would do all day of it doesn't get to talk when I read

Onnabugeisha · 28/11/2022 01:06

when I read it’s like watching a film in my head. I picture everything.
