I have seen this mentioned and can never catch onto what it means.

I’ve tried searching and it was no help.

Please put me out of my misery…

It was a football manager who came up with it wasn’t it? Poo your pants time!

Novasmummy · 12/12/2021 13:34

I always thought it meant being on the edge of your (squeaky plastic) seat not about to shit yourself. I remember watching basketball live once and it was really close. At the end everyone kind of leant forward and the sound of everyone's shoes on the floor and bums on the seats as they leant forward there was an audible squeak.

christmaspavlova · 12/12/2021 14:26

No idea but it sounds weird and cringy

JustLikea · 12/12/2021 15:04

When someone says something bottom clenchingly embarrassing

bonkersbirdie · 12/12/2021 18:05

@DropYourSword has it right for sure. That's how I have always interpreted it.

WakeUpLockie · 12/12/2021 18:06

The phrase makes me so angry. So smug and twee! I know I’m irrational.

Mojoj · 12/12/2021 18:07

Shit scared, i.e. keeping your bum cheeks clenched together really tightly to prevent any poo escaping 😂😂

FireworkParrot · 12/12/2021 18:14

I didn't think it was about shitting yourself. My understanding was that it was first generally used by an ex Man U manager for the crunch time in a game/competition when everyone is in the edge of their seats. In a football ground, the seats are normally made of plastic hence squeaky bum time.

This is how I always interpreted it. It's not about being scared really, more extremely tense and on the edge of your seat. Nothing to do with shitting yourself!

Probably farting (rather than pooing) - but a stress induced tummy problem.

I remember we had a teacher at primary who was very fire and brimstone.

She was once in a rant about how few people got into heaven and just because we were children, that didn’t mean we wouldn’t end up in hell (she was a charmer!).

My tummy got sore and gurgley until I let out the most enormous fart which reverberated on the plastic seat (has a screw missing for full effect). It was looooong and loud.

Of course, the class broke out in hysterics and I got a hell or a row (like I could do it on purpose - my big brother did teach me later how to belch and fart at will). It certainly gave me rock start status among my classmates for a short time.

Ie - squeaky bum. I know some old school journalists who would use it in press room when they were up against print deadline and missing a lead.

mynameiscalypso · 12/12/2021 19:12

It's really nothing to do with poo/fart. If you Google it, all the definitions refer to being on the edge of your seat and the sound of the seat squeaking.

I have my own version, it is called clapping bum time.

Last year during the 1st lockdown, at the time of clapping for the NHS, i had imbibed some fine wine and began jumping up and down like an otter, to amuse DP (don't ask!).
Having put on a wee bit of weight, my arse cheeks made a clapping sound whenever i jumped. It amused us quite a bit and i made the HUGE mistake in wanting to share it on MN.
I titled my post 'clapping for the NHS' and it was removed for being improper.

Looking back, i can see why, kind of, but whether it is still in incredibly poor tase now, I don't know. We shall see when and if this post gets deleted Grin
I say this as an avid supporter of the NHS. Laughter is perpetually misconstrued online.

Hmmm. As a fellow Glaswegian, I’m going to go with the cruder interpretation! We love our l toilet humour...

kitcat15 · 12/12/2021 19:33

@Justwhy123

Usually used during a sports match when you’re on the edge of your seat!
Yes definitely this
BoredatHome321 · 12/12/2021 19:48

An example would be your football team are winning 1-0 in extra time and the opposition are all out attack and you have that nervous, on the edge of your seat sicky feeling.

Normandy144 · 12/12/2021 20:06

It's nothing to do with being scared or pooping your pants. It's based on those intense moments in sports when you're on the edge of your seat willing your team or an individual to win or hold onto a win. So for example if you're winning a football match 2-1 but the losing opposition have been hammering at your goal relentlessly for the last ten minutes of the game, then that's "squeaky bum time". because you're shifting in your seat so much it makes a squeaky sound against the plastic seat.

It's also not a bad feeling either - it's the kind of thing that makes people love sport because of the adrenaline and excitement (and then either triumph or despair).
