WWYD Christmas travel

We live in Melbourne, FIL and DM ( both 89) live in Adelaide.
Current border rules state we must covid test 72 hours prior to leaving state and test again on arrival. Strongly recommended to isolate after test on arrival until test result back. Looks to take 2-3 days to get test results in Adelaide. Expecting delays with increased travel over Christmas.
Plan was to drive (9 hours) over on 22nd and stay with FIL in his 2 bed unit (DD25 on couch) test again. Once clear take FIL to DM for Christmas Day and drive back 26th as DD needs to work 27th.
Now one family member is saying they don’t want to go. ( baring in mind, this will leave both Parents having to find somewhere to go for Christmas at short notice).
Family member states that after 9 hours in a car, the last thing they want to do is queue for hours at a drive through testing station and then isolate again. Only to be staying effectively 3 days before traveling again.
We have no idea how long queues are at testing stations and how long it takes for tests to come back in Adelaide.
Would you travel in this case, or stay home?

How long has it been since you’ve seen them? I’m in Melbourne too - I’d go and leave whoever didn’t want to go behind to sort themselves out for Christmas. Over the last year, you will have spent plenty of time with the immediate household, but not much with the parents in Adelaide - they must be looking forward to it. If it’s DD that doesn’t want to go, can you stay longer?

Stay home, it just sounds like a massive ball ache

Both parents are turning 90 in March and we are planning a combined birthday celebrations and going again then.
DD wants to go, it is DH who wants to stay.

Leave him behind then.

Could you fly? I know you still have to do all the testing but at least you won’t have a 9 hour drive

Chikoroll · 12/12/2021 02:46

flying not an option

I wouldn't go.

Latest intelligence from FIL is no testing needed on arrival- he read it in the paper you know !
Per best man (also in Adelaide). Still need to test in Melbourne and again on arrival in Adelaide, but no need to isolate. 😎
More updates during the week.
I can feel a road trip coming on

Can you get the train (sorry, I don't know anything about Australia!) That way at least you're not trapped in a car for so long.
