Does anyone else listen to radio dramas/plays?

I find audiobooks are much too long for me. I know that you can increase the speed but I'm a fast reader and I can still read the book in less time than it takes to listen to them. I also prefer a full cast to one narrator.

Radio plays are perfect for me. I usually listen while cleaning or while shopping or chatting online. I particularly like horror related dramas but classics too and I'm in the middle of Ben Hur at the moment.

Does anyone else enjoy them?
And do you please have any other recommendations? Which have you most enjoyed?

TIA

Yet another recommendation for Tracks, I loved it and really miss it now I've finished.

@HappenstanceMarmite enjoy! I'm jealous you get to enjoy it for the first time!

@peridito let us know how you get on Smile

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 12/12/2021 23:42

Nosily placemarking 🙂

@peridito for archive.org you can just go to their site, no app needed. You can listen direct on the site or download for use when out and about which is what I do, download over home wifi so my data doesn't take a hit. I also find youtube is fantastic for lots of audio, especially older stuff.
@Effibreast it is fantastic isn't it?
I have my Mum to blame for being a complete audio/radiophile. Couldn't be without it!
I just found a youtube channel that plays who evenings worth of " old time"radio. It's great!

My people! I am glad other people like radio plays too. If you like supernatural, The Lovecraft Investigations are good as is The Battersea Poltergeist. And for comedy, Old Harry's Game.

HalfWomanHalfMincePie · 14/12/2021 16:24

If you haven't listened to the latest John Finnemore series (Souvenir series 9) then do so. Totally different from previous sketch format and more like a long running story that you have to piece together.

6 x 30 min episodes, best heard back to back so that it's easier to click what's going on.

Absolute genius.

Oooh I had a similar thread a couple of months ago and got loads of excellent recommendations! I love:

Miss Marple with June Whitfield
Hercule Poirot with John Moffat
Cabin Pressure
In and Out of the Kitchen
After Henry
No Commitments
Charles Paris
John Finnemore's Double Acts
High Table, Lower Orders
Daunt and Dervish
Sour Hall (Audible Original)
Love in Recovery
Clare in the Community
Pilgrim

I also recommend Spoonface Steinberg if you can get hold of a copy. I was in the stage adaptation twenty years ago and it is a wonderful play.

And someone on here recommended David Sedaris. He's a humorous essayist. Like you, I struggle with audiobooks so was a bit sceptical but he is honestly brilliant - laugh out loud funny.

Meet Me at the Museum with Tamsin Grieg and Paul Ritter was excellent, too (and his last piece of work.)

BreakfastOfWaffles · 14/12/2021 16:46

I love radio drama. As well as lots already mentioned, I enjoy Peter Wimsey and Paul Temple as a blast from the past. Also all the series of Stone.

Namechangenumber23 · 14/12/2021 17:51

My people indeed @ISaySteadyOn Grin
I remember your thread @AlbertCampion Smile but it's dropped off my watch list. Can you link it?

Namechangenumber23 · 14/12/2021 17:53

@EBearhug thanks for the reminder! I forgot about that!

Where can I find this?
EBearhug · 14/12/2021 18:23

It was on Radio 4, so I would guess it might be on Sounds.

DPotter · 14/12/2021 18:35

*@SerenTarot

One of the best things I ever listened to was while painting my bathroom and it was an hour long radio documentary about the morse messages sent out by The Titanic after it hit the Iceberg, up until it eventually sank.*

Can you recall what the documentary was called Seren? Sounds really interesting

Was coming on the also mention
Pilgrim
Tracks
Forest 404

GnomeDePlume · 14/12/2021 18:36

Anything by RD Wingfield if you like a mystery. Look for Oubreak of Fear if you like creepy. He was a prolific writer so there are loads to choose from on YouTube.

AlbertCampion · 14/12/2021 19:25

Here's the thread I started. I forgot Conversations From a Long Marriage. Really lovely.

I love radio dramas. Has the BBC version of Lord of the Rings been mentioned yet on this thread? It's brilliant.
