Workplace leaving collection - going rate?

Purely out of nosiness idle curiosity.
Someone is leaving from your workplace.
There's a whip-round.
What's the going rate?

(For the integrity of my very accurate socio-economic research, please also say what your workplace is.)

Depends if I like them or not to be honest. Usually £5, worked in various public sector roles, currently emergency services.

I put £5 for people I’m indifferent to but maybe £20-30 for close colleagues. I work in the private sector in technology so it’s fairly male dominated and despite me being reasonably senior I’m often the one organising collections both when it’s my own reports going which is expected and when it’s my peers as my boss just fails to think about it. I often then end up topping up the collection in order to be able to make a specific purchase (or if it’s a smaller collection just to make it look respectable) though my boss is also pretty good at stepping in at this point and we split it.

NHS here, also £5 for people who I'm not fussed about, £20ish for closest colleagues, somewhere in between for the rest. Similar amounts for first baby, wedding, big birthday etc

mindutopia · 10/12/2021 19:54

£5, I work for a university. We have a massive department so if people were putting in more than that, we’d end up with a fairly ridiculous amount.

Twospaniels · 10/12/2021 19:55

£3-£5 public sector lowish wage.

scrivette · 10/12/2021 19:55

£5, if they were someone I was close to or were a member of my team then I would also give a separate gift.

DinosApple · 10/12/2021 20:27

I'm going to give a fiver for a colleague leaving where I work - in a primary school. That's a half hour's wage for me. For a close colleague I'd double it.

HumunaHey · 10/12/2021 20:38

I giave any change I had - usually £3-5. If it's a close colleague, I would buy them a gift myself too. This was when I worin the charity sector. Decent pay but there were whip arounds all too often - leavers, birthdays, maternity leaves. It all added up.

I freelance and definitely don't miss that aspect of employment.

Couple of quid if I don’t really know them. If I know them £5 but if very fond of them £10
