Who are National Treasures these days?

DD has been adamant only the Queen and David Attenborough are national treasures. I beg to differ but am finding it hard to think of people! (I do have Covid though).

After bit more discussion, she's added Lenny Henry, and Maggie Smith "at a push". She's 12.

So who do you say are currently national treasures, personality-wise?

Billy Connolly
Anthony Hopkins
Maggie Smith
Pauline Collins
Brian Blessed
Russell T Davies

Between Kathy Burke & Emma Thompson, it’s Kathy all the way.

EmmaT’s relentless self aggrandisement & over-exposure I find very off putting. Anything she associates with I go right off. Likewise Dawn French.

Definitely:

Mary Berry
Judi Dench
Maggie Smith
David Attenborough
Brian Blessed
Michael Palin

And I’d like to nominate Tom Baker.

Peter Capaldi (predominantly for the gift of his portrayal of Malcolm Tucker)
Julie Walters

Professor Chris Whitty.

I’d agree with Joanna Lumely and Brian Blessed.
I’d like to nominate Brian May. He’s an astrophysicist Smile.
He works for animal rights, and just seems like one of the good ones.

@Snoopsnoggysnog

Amazed your DD at 12 has heard of Lenny Henry and Maggie Smith. Off to ask mine if they know who they are. They’ve only heard of YouTube and tiktok stars.
Lenny Henry was in Dr Who episode Spyfall, which we've watched twice this week. Maggie Smith = Prof McGonagall.

I thought national treasures had to be approaching their dotage - not sure Emma Thompson will be hugely flattered. Ditto David Beckham - Poor david did the When am I getting knighted haven't I done enough for charity yet message unfortunatley.

What do you have to have said on a thread like this to be deleted?

Cmsadvice · 11/12/2021 11:54

Yes to David Jason and Marcus Rashford. A billion percent.

Bouledeneige · 11/12/2021 12:52

I don't like most of these people. The Queen is a grumpy old cow.

My nominations would be:
Bob Mortimer
Paul Whitehouse
Jools Holland
Jackie Collins
Judy Dench
Michael Gambon

But I can't stand a lot of the lovies like Miriam Margolyes and Michael Sheen.

AdaColeman · 11/12/2021 14:47

I don't agree with many of those named, but I think Owain Wyn Evans is on his way to being a NT.

SpindlesAdventWhirl · 11/12/2021 14:53

Probably some unsubstantiated allegation that Sir National Treasure has a tangled and unedifying private life. MNHQ understandably delete as they don't need the grief.
