Simple and cheap/free energy saving tips

My energy company sent me an email with ways to save gas - turn temps down etc and one which I was a bit skeptical about but I tried and it seems to make a huge difference - drawing all the curtains before dusk. I've always drawn them when it's already dark, wanting to maximise the last of the days light coming in, but drawing them when the sun is just beginning to sink seems to really work to trap the warmth in.

I expect it's common sense and everyone else already knew but it surprised me so sharing here Grin

Does anyone else have any tried and tested tips?

It does always amaze me how many people turn the heating up and 'live' in shirt sleeves. I mean, it doesn't seem like a 'tip' to me, but .... put a jumper on / wear socks / tuck your top into your trousers..... is something I would always do, but it seems not everyone does.

Ditto Close internal doors - nobody is sitting in the hallway / stairs / landing, so they don't need to be heated to same temperature

Use the radiator thermostats - not all rooms need to be the same temp

Thick curtain across front (and maybe back?) doors, or at least draft excluder..... those brush things in your letterbox.....'sausage' on the floor

Energy saving bulbs, but also turning things off when not using them

Things like only boiling the water you need in the kettle, not filling it.
Not putting oven on for individual items (I was amazed how much energy the oven used compared with slow cooker or microwave)

When I’ve boiled the kettle and made my brew I always put water in again for my next cuppa.
I figure the tap water will be heated a bit by the already hot kettle so won’t take as long to boil next time.
