red cabbage- I cook it gently with apple and spices (cloves, cinnamon, allspice)
pannetone- yes, it's fruit bread, but very light compared to english fruit bread- I'd have it as a snack or maybe part of breakfast, but I've seen it sued eg for bread pudding

I've had panettone with chocolate sauce which was oddly nice. I've a (bought) pear and chocolate one for Christmas.

Pannetone is amazing in a bread and butter pudding.

Red cabbage - shred then fry. Add brown sugar and vinegar and a bit of christmas spice then orange juice.

Hoppinggreen · 09/12/2021 18:08

Don’t eat them together would be my top tip

Silverjellybean71 · 09/12/2021 18:26

I thought it said Pantene when I glanced at it. I def wouldn’t have that with cabbage

LynetteScavo · 09/12/2021 19:24

I read that as Pantone Grin

I eat panettone the same as I eat brioche I stuff a piece in my mouth every time I walk past

I prefer to buy my red cabbage. I cook most things from scratch but I live red cabbage and don't want to break the magic by making it myself. I'm the same with truffle chocolates.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/12/2021 19:35

I also read it as Pantone. I thought it was going to be a Farrow and Ball thread and red cabbage was the name of the latest heritage shade du jour.

I second the delia recipe for cabbage. I’ve deviated slightly with mine over the years now but it’s a good starting point.

Panettone is just really delicious, very light, fruited brioche type bread. It’s especially good with clotted cream.

SeasonFinale · 09/12/2021 19:51

Panettone is lovely toasted too

TheFallenMadonna · 09/12/2021 19:54

Yes to Delia's red cabbage.
We toast panettone and eat with butter. We have it for breakfast on Christmas day, which I'm sure is wrong, but it's delicious.

ThatDreamSheep · 09/12/2021 19:55

Red cabbage I tend to cook low and slow in the slow cooker for as long as possible. Can make now and freeze to save you effort on the day. And pannetones - Lidl do mini ones and I'll eat a mini fruit one with a cup of tea any time of the day! They are lovely

LostArcher · 09/12/2021 19:57

Red cabbage cook the day before using Delias recipe. It microwaves well.

Panettone - slice and toast. Smother with butter. Nyum.

picklemewalnuts · 09/12/2021 19:58

I thought I was going to read about a hair colouring disaster involving red cabbage. Quite relieved to be honest.

Gruffalogrinch · 09/12/2021 20:00

Another yes for Delia’a cabbage. It freezes brilliantly and reheats well in the microwave.

PositiveLife · 09/12/2021 20:00

Red cabbage - think I used the Delia recipe. It made quite a lot though. Might be easier to buy ready made if you're not sure you like it.

Panettone - like a fruit bread in a tall cake shape. I'm told it's really nice in bread and butter pudding but there's never any leftovers. I eat it as it comes for Xmas day breakfast/snacks plus all the ones I ate before Xmas cos I couldn't resist them

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 09/12/2021 20:03

I use Nigella's recipe for red cabbage. It's cooked with cranberries so it means I don't have to do cranberry sauce separately

www.nigella.com/recipes/red-cabbage-with-cranberries

I like to toast a slice of panettone, I prefer the chocolate chip one though because I don't like candied peel.

CorpusCallosum · 09/12/2021 20:12

Second the Delia recipe. Recently I did some fresh from a BBC good food recipe and it was disappointing. I had some out the freezer which had been Delia and it was sooooooooo good.

AdaColeman · 09/12/2021 20:31

Red cabbage, buy from somewhere like M&S or Sainsburys. People will just have a spoonful or two each, and the bought product is indistinguishable from the homemade when eaten with the rest of the Christmas meal. So save yourself time and effort.

Panettone, delicious, especially served with jam and a cup of hot chocolate. Look out for star shaped Pandoro too, another lovely Italian treat.

casinoroyale4ever · 09/12/2021 20:35

Have you seen Pandoro cut with marscapone and fruit? Yummy...

Making panettone is a bit of a faff as it's bread based, my dd did last christmas and took ages - was delicious!

Lots of lovely varieties in all the supermarkets
