I've got a 5 year one to start in 2022, it's a lot smaller than I thought! What do you mainly write about?

Yes! It actually finished last year on covid. I wrote about what I’d been up to that day more than thoughts/feelings, or funny conversations with friends that I otherwise would’ve forgotten about. It was really nice looking back and remembering the little bits we’d been up to each day.

Oh mine had a few lines in it though!

The statement that will jog my memory in one, 5, 15, 50 years time.

Luxembourgmama · 09/12/2021 12:44

Yes been doing mine for almost 6 years now

I thought this meant something entirely different.

I've recently started doing this in google docs - I have a template that I copy over to a new document each monthish that's in line with my menstrual cycle that a cross between a one line diary and a symptom tracker.

So it has a table with 3 columns, 1st column is the day of my cycle, 2nd is the calendar date, 3rd is the diary bit where I put in what day of the week it is, and then I list how I feel, any big events that day and how they left me feeling, what I enjoyed & energized me and sometimes what I didn't enjoy or am struggling with. This month, I'm listing when it's been very hard to get up and days when it's been easy to see if there is any rhyme or reason to it.

I currently look it over at least once a month to see what I've done and look for patterns. I have a header on my document template where I'm starting to list ideas I've read about and patterns I'm starting to see for different parts of my cycle.

I wish I'd started doing this last March, there's so much I can't remember! Details of lockdowns, curfews and rules etc.

My dad (80) has kept daily diaries since he was a kid, just one or two lines a day - where he went and who with. These records have proved to be amazing all these years later - I'll sit with my parents now discussing an event from 30 years ago and he'll dig out his diary and say actually we were in such a place with xyx. Completely unremarkable events at the time yet now mean so much.

I love the idea is a diary but I can't always keep it up every day. I keep it by my bed and not a few notes. Usually where I have been, things that made me happy/sad/etc. Lovely to look back over

LOL!

Whats the concept? You write one line a day to summarise things?

Ruibies · 09/12/2021 20:46

Yes! I've got one year left in mine for 2022. Some days are extremely mundane: 'feel tired today, bored at work.' 'Walked the dog - muddy.' 'Bolognaise for dinner.'

And then others are wonderfully exciting: 'we got engaged!' 'We got married!' 'Took a test and I'm pregnant!'

Mine also documents me finding out I had cancer and all my treatment, 2 international moves, adopting a dog, buying a house, and of course all the covid stuff. Even a line or 2 a day can summarise massive life events. Looking back on everything that I've been through over the last 4 years is wild, including the mundane days, and I'm so glad I got one. Will deffo be getting another!

BlueBloodedBlue · 09/12/2021 20:57

I've been doing one since 1986 (36 years!)

It's really useful to end arguments about which year and when we did what and it's fun to read back and remind me of events etc

Only problem is without a lot of detail, I've read about a night out with Janet and Roy (Smile) and I now haven't a clue who they were!

Someone bought a five year diary for a relative of mine for Christmas in 1938. I’m not sure they expected it would turn in to such an amazing record of family history. It’s absolutely fascinating.

Think the other poster meant one line of drugs a day.

Saw a diary in urban outfitters, but there's a lot on Amazon too.
