Looking for some career change inspiration. So just wondered , what job do you do, and do you enjoy it ?

I’m a policy advisor in the civil service.
I love it. I get to work on really interesting policies and with a real range of people.
I WFH, part time and flexi, so it works around life too.

silvercosmopolitian · 09/12/2021 12:28

That sounds really interesting, so developing government policy ?

Work in a care home for adults with learning disabilities.

I fucking love it! The people I look after are so lovely. It’s like hanging out with your friends every day.

silvercosmopolitian · 09/12/2021 12:51

That also sounds really interesting @TheLightSideOfTheMoon

Civil service...I work in a laboratory at the minute but really interested in policy work. Would love to hear more about your role/background @Smarshian

Burial and Crematorium support - administration mainly, but I can cremate when required. I Love it.

Maverickess · 09/12/2021 12:56

I work on an elderly care unit for people with dementia. I love the actual day to day interaction and the job itself, there's aspects that are physically, emotionally and mentally challenging but sometimes with the right results they can be the most rewarding aspects, which is important.

I hate the 'politics' around it, the societal attitude and the pay and conditions though, which all make the job much harder than they need to be.

vodkaredbullgirl · 09/12/2021 12:59

Senior Carer in a dementia unit, work nights with 2 other carers. Been with the same company for 17 yrs, but only worked night shifts for 4 years.

silvercosmopolitian · 09/12/2021 13:10

@user1491404899 did you have to have a lot of training for that ?

eLearning project manager

Used to love it, now not so much

itwasntaparty · 09/12/2021 13:21

Prof services, climbing the greasy pole. 8o% enjoyable, 20% stressed to fuck. Enjoy the salary.

Pegasussnail · 09/12/2021 13:23

Teacher (in a specialist role)
Find it tough to be honest.

hivemindneeded · 09/12/2021 13:26

I'm an editor. Yesterday I was working on a short film until late evening. Last week I was working on a beautiful memoir. I love my job. The pay is pretty good. But it is about as sedentary and solitary as any job can be. I have had it with my WFH office. I get so lonely. Client meetings are great but I would love more contact with colleagues, which only happens about once every three months.

SlurpleThePurple · 09/12/2021 13:30

I'm a print and graphic designer, working freelance. I work on a huge range of projects from prints for fashion and sportswear brands, large scale murals, branding, artwork for independents such as breweries etc. They usually come to me because they like the style of my work and want me to do my thing, rather than me working towards a specific brief. I'm very lucky!

BlackKittyKat · 09/12/2021 13:32

Self employed communications and PR consultant. 80% love it.

As I'm self employed I can pick and choose my hours (as long as I meet my deadlines) and I'm fairly well established now so can pick and choose my work.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 09/12/2021 13:38

Governance, risk and compliance. Mainly focused on Info security but also cover Environmental sustainability, quality and IT service delivery. Developing and maintaining policies/procedures, education/training the company on standards, auditing that people/processes are compliant to the standards and obtaining external accreditations. Get involved in new project/contracts to embed security/quality/privacy/corporate values. It's really varied but a big big job with lots of competing priorities

TokyoSushi · 09/12/2021 13:41

I'm a PA, it's a lovely job, but the industry I work in is exceptionally dull. I'd love to transfer and do the same job but in a much more exciting industry!

Terribleluck · 09/12/2021 13:42

I've been recently appointed as an Engagement Manager for a software company. It's a mix of account, sales, and project management.

2pinkginsplease · 09/12/2021 13:45

I’m an early years practitioner, only qualified last year. Had worked in hospitality for 18years before that and wanted a change.

I love my day to day job and the children here is never a dull moment , I detest the paperwork!

user1491404899 · 09/12/2021 13:46

Not alot of training really. I learnt to cremate over a month, and did a test bei g watched afterwards to qualify. There's lots of laws you have to know though.

FunnysInLaJardin · 09/12/2021 13:47

Solicitor working in mainly property law.

Really enjoy it, although it can be stressful.

I work for a great firm and the pay etc is reasonable.

MondeoFan · 09/12/2021 13:49

Work with 2-5 year olds. Qualified up to my eyeballs.
Trained as a hairdresser originally then fell out of love with it so went into working with children around 13 years ago. Never looked back. Fits in with my lifestyle as weekends off. Pay is good and lots of bonuses to work towards.

waterlego · 09/12/2021 13:53

Interesting to read about other people’s occupations. I’m a Group Fitness instructor. I absolutely love it. Downside is the pay isn’t great, and getting a proper contract is almost unheard of, especially at the moment. So the work is freelance or 0 hours contracts. If I don’t work, I don’t get paid.

By its nature, it is limited in the amount of hours one can do. Some of the young’uns teach 20+ classes a week but that isn’t realistic for most.

user1471523870 · 09/12/2021 13:55

Team manager for a large corporate (think business consulting type). I like looking after my team and watch them grow professionally. Salary is great and so are benefits and work-life balance.
But I still dream of doing something less structured!

GiltEdges · 09/12/2021 14:07

I'm a Data Protection Officer. I love my job, because no two days are the same. Most of my time is spent attending various project meetings and looking at how new initiatives / systems / business changes will impact on personal data, then providing advice about how to do things safely and within the law. It's not a job you can just do on autopilot as it relies a lot on judgement and interpretation of the legislation, as well as horizon scanning to keep my knowledge up-to-date.
