Disclaimer: every time I read ‘ring your GP’ I will direct a hollow laugh into my phone screen.

5 year old. I’ve been working nights so haven’t really seen her since Sunday morning. She had a cold then but was fine. She now has spots. I noticed the ones on her lip and thought they were cold sores. She also has them developing on her hands though and I’ve noticed them all over her general shorts area when she was getting changed just now. They don’t appear to be itchy but is chickenpox itchy at first!?

We’ve never had chickenpox in any of the others somehow so I’m not sure what I’m looking for.

Thanks!

She says the spots are painful but not itchy!?

If it's chicken pox you will know as they literally explode within a few hours. When my DD had them she had 1/2 suspicious looking spots when she got up but by lunchtime she was covered including her scalp. And they were blistery/wet looking.

I was going to say could be hand foot and mouth if she's been a bit poorly/cold too. Or could be just a viral rash/spots?

Could it be hand foot and mouth?

Almost certainly hand foot and mouth.

Face, palms, soles, genital area, could be all of these but not always.

Elzbells · 09/12/2021 08:10

If mostly around the mouth, hands & genitals area it's more likely to be hand foot & mouth. She will more than likely get ulcers in the mouth too.

There's nothing to treat it really just lots of fluids etc

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 09/12/2021 08:10

Will sometimes get them inside her mouth so eating might be painful.

I’d guess hand foot and mouth, google the differences between the two and where they tend to be on the body.

Thank you

I'd also guess hand foot and mouth. Chickenpox doesn't really present on the hands and you'd normally see them on the torso too. Also common for HFM around the pants area

spiderlight · 09/12/2021 09:50

My first thought was HFM too - I saw a news item yesterday saying it's rife at the moment. Hope she's not too uncomfortable.

Mooscow · 09/12/2021 09:51

Can you post a pic? (Obviously not of the genital area)

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 09/12/2021 09:53

Hard to tell without a pic but sounds like HFM from the distribution.

Rememberallball · 09/12/2021 10:00

Another vote for HFM - it’s rife round here and my twins had it 3 weeks ago. T2 got a few spots in his elbow and knee creases and not much more; T1 was absolutely covered though they started round his mouth - started on the Monday morning and, by mid afternoon on Tuesday when we saw GP, it was infected across most of his arms & legs. Now it’s morphed into a flare of his eczema while you’d never know T2 had it!!

MamaRaisingBoys · 09/12/2021 10:31

Sounds like HFM. DS6 had it recently and it was worse than chickenpox for him. The itchy hands and feet were unbearable and he couldn’t eat for days. We used Poxclin mousse and Difflam throat spray which gave him some relief. Hope it’s not too bad for you!

Moonbabby · 09/12/2021 13:19

Thank you. I hadn’t even thought of HFM - none of them have ever had that either. I’ll get some pictures. Thank you

Hand foot and mouth. Highly contagious. Hope she's okay.

Marcipex · 09/12/2021 13:29

The doctor on This Morning had just said HFM is rife just now.
She recommended soft food like bananas, yogurt and porridge.
