My 15 year old has an ingrown toenail. It got infected and he had antibiotics it didnt work so he had another set. We now have an appointment to see podiatrist on 20th december .

His toe is still red and im wondering if i should go back to the gp again or just wait until the podiatrist appt? I feel a bit ridiculous going back for a third time about a toenail!

@DrMadelineMaxwell

It's £200 around here for private toenail surgery at the chiropodist/podiatrist.

I asked for a referral for dd to have it done on the nhs and luckily the podiatry people come to her gp once a month. She had it done on Tuesday, the cutting out of mail down each side.

That's what we paid. I rang the GP and our CCG don't do podiatry.

Go back to GP they might refer for removal of nail

Tea tree cream on it several times a day and keeping foot clean. Maybe a trip to a chiropodist

Thanks shehas my husband has the exact same looking toes he has often had irritated toes but hes stubborn and ignores it (until he can pop blisters its horrific).

My son also has flat feet and im conviced that doesnt help because he walks almost with his toe downwards!

Anyway thanks for the advice!

If it gets so bad that he’s unable to put weight on it and is struggling to walk please go to A&E and insist on a proper examination/scan.

My son had a toe infection caused by a small cut he got in the school swimming pool. It became a bone eating infection without us realising and by the time they took it seriously (we had to go to A&E 4 times to get diagnosed) it was critical.

He was rushed into surgery under general anaesthetic and they cleaned the bone out. Very distressing talks were had with the consultant who said he would possibly lose a toe or potentially his foot and May never be able to play sport again, would need lengthy rehabilitation etc. it was heartbreaking. We were extremely lucky that they managed to clean the infection out and save the foot but I was told that if it had been left just another hour or two this probably wouldn’t have been possible.

Sorry if this scares you but I couldn’t not share just in case you weren’t aware it could happen- I certainly wasn’t before it happened to my son!
