anybody given up booze and feel knackered?

I stopped drinking just over a month ago, but I'm more tired! I have a hectic, tiring life so part of that is normal but it just seems so much worse since I quit. I want daytime naps, I want to be in bed by 8. Is this a thing?

Could peri-menopause be a factor?

OldMagicTiger · 08/12/2021 15:21

Yes possibly. I'm early 40s, it just seemed like such a coincidence

I found that giving up booze (for a month!) didn't make me feel any better. I was expecting to have a permanently clear head and zing with energy.

But it just made me realise 1) how much shitter i felt after drinking and 2) how much a good couple of glasses or a lovely pub session every so often actually helps me destress, which helps me have the energy to deal with everyday life.

My bet is peri. It can make you absolutely shattered.

I gave up booze 3 years ago and yes I was knackered for at least 6 weeks. I was drinking too much out of habit so I drank after work most days.
I probably had all sorts of imbalances and it messes with your nervous system too.

Wnikat · 08/12/2021 15:47

Fatigue is a withdrawal symptom.

OldMagicTiger · 08/12/2021 15:56

Will get tested for peri @Aquamarine1029

If it's a withdrawal symptom when will it pass? Is 6 weeks pretty average? @Northernsoullover @Wnikat

I did start feeling a lot better after 6 weeks. I was sleeping properly and eating properly too but it wasn't instant. I remember waking up and feeling so lethargic I automatically assumed I had been drinking.

Worth taking a good quality B-complex, with extra thiamine to get 100mg/day as heavy drinking depletes this.

When I was peri I started Vogel Menopause Support supplements. I was so fatigued but once it was 60 days it started to really help.

I take a multivitamin and B8, I eat pretty healthily and take fish oils :-(

But if your thiamine levels have been depleted by heavy drinking then that won’t be enough. The levels in multivitamin are very low.
OldMagicTiger · 09/12/2021 09:18

Thanks @SparklingLime maybe I should try this. I wasn't a heavy drinker as such but I had drunk wine constantly for decades so maybe the accumulative effect is the same

Bought thiamin. All I want to do is lie in bed!
