I am at the end of my rope.

I’ve been quite unwell for the past ten days. I assumed Covid because my daughter had it but I’ve tested and tested and tested and it’s always negative.

The horrible sinusy fluey feeling has finally passed but I can’t shake this awful cough and it’s driving me mad. It’s sore. It’s keeping me awake. I’m at the end of my tether with it. So is my husband. He’d never say anything but it’s keeping him awake too.

Had a telephone call with GP who thinks it’s viral and to give it more time.

Please. It’s so debilitating. There must be something that can help me.

Had covid in October and was left with a residual cough, then caught a virus which exacerbated the coughing, ended up with laryngitis, had to visit hospital because they thought it was pleurisy, but it wasn't, it was just this effing cough...

Had to have amoxicillin and tablet steroids.

Partner for it after me and is still off work and is on his second lot of steroids, plus mow has an inhaler.

Speak to a GP, lots of us near me have caught this same cough, specially if we haven't long ago had covid. Immune systems are wiped.

Yes, Night Nurse if you are allowed to take it. Knocks you out properly - don't do anything important the morning after. Stops that tickly nasal drip which causes the cough.

Vicks is brilliant as well. Bizarrely, rubbed on the soles of your feet as well as on your chest. Wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.

Also prop yourself up, make your pillows high.

Sympathies OP I have a constant bloody cough all the time at the moment (not covid have had 3 PCR tests this month thanks to having two children in primary schools!)

We've all had it/got it. All PCR tested several times. If not covid it just a grotty, sinus-y cold with a rotten cough. Children are nearly better so I'm hoping I'm only a few days behind.

I've found blackcurrant Lemsip Max helpful and have been stealing the children's Olbas Oil on a flannel at night!

Same here- all symptoms of covid but I think it's just a cold as all my test are negative.

Getting so annoyed. I know I shouldn't but I've been stuck in so much the past couple not years I just want to be able to enjoy the festive season.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 08/12/2021 16:04

I’ve had it since November 2nd, it’s a little better than it was but it keeps flaring up.
Negative PCRs, it’s just dragging on and it’s worse in cold weather and at night 😢

Hi OP. I have just Been to GP because of this issue, cough for 4 months and terrible at night. He prescribed Nexium for acid reflux x 14 days, dymista steroid spray and anti histamine combined and difflam spray.
5 days in and no cough.

@Coronilla

Oh, I forgot - gargle with salt water. Totally disgusting but it does help.

Yes I was going to say this - warm salt water. Very useful for sore gums too. Gargle for two or three minutes. Also Vicks vapour rub on the chest and glands under the jaw. When I'm out I suck on Potters cough pastilles with Menthol, pumilio and eucalyptus oils - Boots have a similar one. Very useful when I'm wearing a Covid mask also. Also avoid dairy - though I think plain live yoghurt or kefir is OK. Make sure there's some moisture in the room - I find I cough more if too hot. Also lots of hot drinks as a PP said - including fresh grated ginger Get well soon!! 🌹

You get a cough because when you have sinus issues, it drips down your throat at night and goes onto your chest.

So the first thing to do when you feel yourself going down with a cold, or if you still have sinus issues, you need to keep your nose clear. Which means sudafed, and at night, vicks or tiger balm to keep your sinuses clear.

Once it stops dripping, your body can clear your lungs.

Marianne1234 · 08/12/2021 17:35

I’ve had PCRs and lateral flows. All negative

I think the only thing that really helps is hot water with lemon and honey plus paracetamol. It's no miracle cure, but it's as effective as anything else on the market.

LFTs aren't pointless with symptoms, they won't suddenly become ineffective because you have a cough. Originally PCRs were recommended with symptoms simply because it's more important you get an accurate result, but now it looks like LFTs are almost as accurate anyway

Watching with interest... struggling with a horrendous cough, keeping me up at night, it's relentless, also headaches and stuffy nose and bad throat. Currently waiting for 2nd pcr result, but keep hearing of lots of people who have these symptoms and it's not covid.
Just had a hot bath and not coughed once. The moment I got out I was coughing. Sad

Marianne1234 · 08/12/2021 17:57

It’s just awful at night especially. Waking myself up coughing constantly. It’s like there’s an irritation at the back of my throat and i can’t get rid of it. I am propped right up as well.
