Should I take DS to A&E?

He's hurt his knee. Probably pissing about wrestling with his brother.

He's 14. He walks 2 miles to school.

So had the last couple of days off. Icing it.

He's hopping around, not weight bearing.

It's swollen but not bruised. Am 99% sure he's just twisted it.

Called GP today and they said there's nothing they can do and to go A&E.

I went for myself a few weeks ago and was there 8 hours 😑

Will they actually do anything apart from tell him to rest and ice it like we are already doing?

I just feel like it's one of those things they can't really do anything for? Or should I just pack a sandwich and go 😭

Did you speak to GP or receptionist? A GP can do an X-ray request so you can book an X-ray appointment so you aren’t in A&E unnecessarily.

Failing that, minor injuries unit as pp said.

Biffsboys · 08/12/2021 09:24

You should take him , my ds hurt his knee and I didn`t take him right away , turned out he had a fractured kneecap and was in a cast and crutches for 8 weeks

endofthelinefinally · 08/12/2021 09:25

Go. My ds did similar and was in plaster for 6 weeks. He had torn something, can't remember what.

Yiu do need to go somewhere with Xray facilities.

FizzyOrange · 08/12/2021 09:29

You've been advised by the GP to go to A&E so it's best to take him. In my hospital, there is a separate children's A&E section so the wait times are less and it's likely to not be too busy on a Wednesday morning. It will put your mind at rest.

ittakes2 · 08/12/2021 09:34

Do you not have a minor injuries unit near you? Ring 111 and ask because they can book you an appt then and its less waiting.

rhowton · 08/12/2021 09:36

Is he your second child OP? Grin

santasmuma · 08/12/2021 09:36

It's definitely not broken. 100%

How can you possibly know?

You have waited until day 3 to even contact the GP and now want to ignore the advice anyway?

Please, take your son to A&E as advised.

I would try to get in with a private physio

PurpleDaisies · 08/12/2021 09:42

@ABCDEF1234

I would try to get in with a private physio
Why? We have an nhs for this. Confused
Newuser82 · 08/12/2021 09:45

And also a physio probably won’t treat him without seeing a doctor first?

endofthelinefinally · 08/12/2021 09:48

What are you going to do if he still can't weight bear in a week? A fortnight? Just take him and make sure his knee joint isn't damaged.

Even though a Dr said to go to a and e?
Cherrytart23 · 08/12/2021 09:51

If the swelling is going down I would leave it. Could he be playing on it to stay of school longer my ds would absolutely make out it was worse than it is for few extra days off.

newnameagain99 · 08/12/2021 09:51

Personally I wouldn't bother.

If he is playing it, having it looked like a medical professional will stop that.

Third 😂

I just don’t understand some posters.

He is injured.
He has been told by the gp surgery to go to a and e.
We have an advice line that can help in this situation.

Why wouldn’t you use any of those things?

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/12/2021 10:00

If his pain thresholds high it could be damaged and need treatment.

If you break your ankle you can still weightbear which shouldn’t really be a “thing”

Third child 😁

HarrisMcCoo · 08/12/2021 10:03

Minor injuries unit best bet.

BitBroken · 08/12/2021 10:04

111 online says to contact GP Hmm

Should I take DS to A&E?

Our local MIU is staffed by a very angry Nurse and a GP on call if you're lucky. How it's still open is beyond me. I went in with a horribly infected horsefly bite on advice from 111 and was given short shrift and sent packing. Ended up in A & E two days later with cellulitis. I'm a trained HCA and knew what an infection looked like Hmm

I'd always advise A & E with anything that may need a X ray. Pack a snack bag and take the hit. Hope he's soon on the mend.

I called the GP and was only able to speak to the receptionist and then used 111 who told me to call my GP.

Calm down.

What about minor injuries? Might be quieter than a&e and they can usually do x rays! Or ring 111 and see what they advise.

PurpleDaisies · 08/12/2021 10:06

111 online says to contact GP Hmm
And your GP has said to go to A and E.

Is this really difficult in a way that I don’t understand?
