warm school uniform for girls

Where do you get your primary school daughters school uniform from?

Everything seems so thin and cold and she came home from school freezing yesterday.

I'm after some extra warm tights, maybe a warmer pinafore dress and a warmer cardigan, that won't break the bank cost wise.

She won't wear trousers, and to be honest the fabric they are made from is very thin compared to her brothers school trousers anyway.

I am insisting that she wears a vest/hat/gloves/scarf etc. she has a warm winter coat. But her legs and hands are always freezing.

I bought her some warm fleece lined boots which she wears and they do keep her feet fairly warm.

Mine wore tights under trousers yesterday.

PinkWaferBiscuit · 08/12/2021 07:46

How old is she. To be honest I'd be insisting on trousers with tights under them a tshirt and a jumper (much warmer than a flimsy cardigan). That's what all the girls in my class are currently wearing, a pair of tights and pinafore is just not going to keep them warm in this kind of weather.

whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy · 08/12/2021 07:47

The tights are quick thick aren't they? Jusf a vest it even a long sleeved vest should do it?

My daughters pinafores and cardigans are from M&S and George. They are thicker than the previous years.

SheWoreYellow · 08/12/2021 07:49

I agree, T-shirt under uniform. We have thermal stuff from Uniqlo.
Thermal leggings under trousers would be more comfortable than tights as they don’t fall down so much.

Auntycorruption · 08/12/2021 07:52

Jersey style trousers (next)

Vest, polo, sweatshirt. Yes the sweater is "boys" but it's much warmer than an open cardigan

Nidan2Sandan · 08/12/2021 07:53

Mine wears fleece lined leggings under trousers, vest, polo tshirt & jumper.

Its December, I wouldnt be letting a primary school child insist on skirt and tights given most classrooms also have doors and windows open due to covid. Even thick tights will still allow a draft up the skirt. Put your foot down on the skirt & get her properly dressed for the weather

FabriqueBelgique · 08/12/2021 07:57

I’m seeing girls out with bare legs, still!!

We do layers under general uniform. Leggings, long sleeves.. Amazon do an amazing set of chargeable hand warmers that I plop in their coat pockets.

DaisyWaldron · 08/12/2021 08:04

Thermal lights, long-sleeved heattech or similar thermal top under the school shirt, cardigan/jumper/sweatshirt. Depending on the uniform styles, you can layer up jumpers (larger sized sweatshirt or cardigan over school jumper, cardigan over tank top etc).

didireallyjustsaythat · 08/12/2021 08:07

I've literally just bought fleece lined tights and some very pretty thermal t-shirts from primark. My daughter sits right next to the window the school insists must stay open all day long even in the freezing cold. She says the tights and t- shirt have kept her much warmer so she's happy and I'm happy as they didn't cost much.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/12/2021 08:10

Go for sweatshirt style cardigans rather than the thin woolen ones.

reluctantbrit · 08/12/2021 08:11

DD hated school trousers so wore a skirt all year round.

We found the John Lewis tights quite warm.

Thermal vest or top (depending on cut of. shirt) underneath her shirt and then a. jumper. Cardigans are often quite thin.

Get her decent gloves. The best we found were fleece lined football gloves from Decathlon. Thin so DD could use her hands and a lot warmer than anything knitted.

Handwarmes in her pockets.

MrsWooster · 08/12/2021 08:17

Dd wears her brother’s hand-me-down trousers. If her brother’s are warmer, why are you buying your dd ‘inferior’ quality?

MissCreeAnt · 08/12/2021 08:20

soft stretch jersey pinafores or trousers. Much comfier and warmer than boys' trousers and she can put tights underneath.

endlesscraziness · 08/12/2021 08:21

Sweatshirt cardigans from Amazon, jersey pinafores and long boots

DeathMetalMum · 08/12/2021 08:21

Mine find skirts warmer than pinafores, they can tuck their polo shirts into the skirts and stops the wind blowing everywhere.

This is the first time mine have worn trousers this year they are Y4 and Y6 and always wore either a pinafore or skirt despite trousers being available and them only choosing to wear trousers outside of school. Hmm

I agree. There's no point insisting on hat, gloves, scarf etc when she's inside most of the day wearing a skirt and tights. It's time to be firm with her, it's cold and a skirt isn't suitable for this weather. I'm sure you wouldn't let her brother wear shorts in December. Layers are the way to go.
OatALot · 08/12/2021 08:27

Heat holder tights from Next. She wears them with shorts. Vest. T shirt and a nice black school jumper from Next too that is warm. Luckily she can wear black boots.

Skysblue · 08/12/2021 08:52

I don’t understand your comment that her brothers trousers are warmer. Trousers are trousers, if you’ve found a warm brand, buy those for both of them.

I’d put my foot down and make her wear trousers personally. There’s enough sexism in the world without children thinking trousers are a male thing.

My son has been wearing M&S knitted jersey trousers for years, they’re soft warm and stretchy. You’ll find them in the girls section.

bonkersbirdie · 08/12/2021 10:59

Some really helpful comments thank you. Will have a look for some of these. She is 8 (going on 13) and very opinionated about what she wants to wear. She's too old for me to force her into clothes she doesn't feel comfortable in so I will look into fleece lined leggings and tights and some warmer sweater type tops.

I'm not buying "inferior trousers" through choice - they were bought from the same shop at the same time from what was available and the "boys" trousers with reinforced knees that are thicker (and therefore warmer) don't fit her they are a completely different shape from what she needs.

It's not my fault that some shops think that because shes a girl she doesn't need the same level of quality. It's well established that many shops don't cater for women's comfort - we want pockets etc.

Mine wears leggings with her dresses and skirts, she wears them with black socks so that they look like tights, her issue with tights is they kept falling down not that they were cold personally so we just go with leggings I’ve never had a problem finding warm school uniform for girls 🤷‍♀️

UnLunDun · 08/12/2021 11:27

Good quality Thermal tights and city shorts? That would stop them falling down. We wear thermal vest/long johns under uniform trousers or jersey pinafore/thermal tights/thermal vest x 2. She prefers pinafores by far. Next and John Lewis are our preferred shops.

itwasntaparty · 08/12/2021 11:33

Mine are in skirts and socks (their choice!), base layer, shirt, cardigan, snood, fingerless gloves and coat.

They're still keeping the doors and windows open.

They won't entertain tights or trousers.

Calendulaaaaa · 08/12/2021 11:48

Primark fur-lined leggings in womens XS. (They are absolutely tiny)

M&S heatgen PLUS in a womans 6 (Still quite big on her but so thick)

Ugg boots (school are allowing it because the windows are open)

On top of this, anything she wants because I'm happy that this is warm enough.
