Toothpaste allergy - any ideas what to try next?

Has anyone else got a toothpaste allergy. I used to be fine with the sensodyne without SLS. Now I can’t find it anywhere and every other sensodyne makes my lips feel really sore. They burn and peel too. I’ve tried Jason’s, Waken, Aloe Dent. All make my lips burn. Any idea which to try next?

If you don't get an answer on here maybe you could ask your dentist OP? They may know of a specially formulated brand.

There is a specialist toothpaste called oranurse which is sls free non foaming and unflavoured I get it off Amazon for my toothpaste hating teen. It's not cheap but is good.

SilverHairedCat · 07/12/2021 21:21

I use Oral B Pronamel. I'm sure it's SLS free, but it definitely doesn't make my mouth slough off. Most things do!

I had this Ben & Anna tooth powder before in a subscription box and it was better than I expected - it says SLS free: www.mypure.co.uk/collections/ben-anna-dental-care

MissCreeAnt · 07/12/2021 21:23

I don't know but there is a brand called oranurse which is specifically designed to be non-foaming for people with sensory sensitivities, autism etc, so it might well be SLS free. It's also unflavoured. No idea what's in it but you can buy it online or order it at a pharmacy.

Thanks so much. I didn’t expect any replies. Alfixn. I asked my dentist a while back and he gave me a sample of the Oral B pronamel but that made my lips burn and peel . I think start with the Oranurse as it’s been mentioned a few times so far and it seems to have a lot of things omitted which bodes well as I’m not 100% sure what is causing the problem. If that doesn’t do the trick I’ll try some of the others. Such a helpful thread. Another I’ve tried is Kingfisher. But that was no good either.

OP, I have this. I use Kingfisher toothpaste. You can get it from Amazon, Waitrose and Holland and Barrett.

I bulk buy so I never run out.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 07/12/2021 21:41

Oops just seen you’ve tried Kingfisher. Have you tried their fluoride free one? I began with that then worked up to the one with fluoride.

Blossom64265 · 07/12/2021 21:45

You need to try to figure out what ingredient is causing the problem. I have to avoid fluoride and flavor so I use Cleure unflavored.

Is it causing little hard bumps around your mouth, a more general rash? Different ingredients have different typical reactions so we might be able to help narrow it down. Everyone is different so it’s not perfect. Patch testing would pinpoint the issue, but it’s hard to get and it’s unpleasant, so trial and error is definitely a way to start.

Blossom64265 · 07/12/2021 21:48

Sorry, I should have read more closely. You described the problem. It doesn’t sound like fluoride, but I would still try a fluoride free just for process of elimination.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/12/2021 21:52

Corsodyl ultra clean is 100% SLS free. It has a mildly antiseptic taste though, not mint

Notatwite · 07/12/2021 22:30

Blossom. My lips go very dry and then start to burn and sting. I don’t get any itching or bumps.

I'm sensitive to some toothpastes. Best I've found for me is Colgate Smile which is their SLS free/eco toothpaste.

misscockerspaniel · 07/12/2021 22:36

I have the same problem and use Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief Repair and Prevent - they do a version which is SLS free.

Gotmyprincecharming · 07/12/2021 22:51

Aldi brand, the sensitive one is sls free..my DS gets a reaction from that ingredient and I was searching on mumsnet for brands to use and came across it..no reactions from it yet anyway and its been a few months of using it.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 07/12/2021 22:54

Has anyone else developed an allergy later on in life? I’ve never had a problem at all and a new tube of Sensodyne (same type I’ve had before) is possibly responsible for a reaction. No previous issues with toothpaste.

A580Hojas · 07/12/2021 22:56

I buy the original Sensodyne in bulk online. Can't remember which company from now - it might even be Amazon.

CocoCom · 29/12/2024 08:26

Hi @Notatwite ,
Have you found the suitable toothpaste yet? My mother also developed the same issue and I would like to look for different options for her to try.
Thanks.
