What was absolutely, undisputedly better in The Old Days?

Back when you were young, or even before that?

I'm going to kick off with Beany Babies. The realistic style 90's ones were so much nicer than the massive eyed/sparkly/rainbow coloured monstrosities of today. Angry

Your turn!

@evtheria

- Scrabble sets, new ones are awful!
  • CDs - I love Spotify but honestly feel sorry for kids not experiencing the thrill of buying a new cd and immediately looking through the booklet; checking out the artwork/photos, having the joy of having all the lyrics (or the disgust when there weren’t any included!) and memorising the credits for each song...
  • MTV
Not CDs but trying to record songs off the radio 1 top 40 and timing it right so you don’t get the DJ talking.
lonsdaleshorts · 07/12/2021 20:09

Also going to Blockbusters on Saturday to pick a couple of videos and then all your juice and snacks.

furbabymama87 · 07/12/2021 20:10

Chocolate, pop bands, the Body Shop products, Turkey Twizzlers, Saturday night TV.

Daisychainsandglitter · 07/12/2021 20:16

Lucozade- tastes rubbish now.
Cadbury's chocolate tastes awful since Kraft took over.
Body shop- amazing when I was young in the 90s.
The thrill of finding a CD you'd been searching for and taking it home, looking at the artwork, reading the lyrics etc. So good!

A580Hojas · 07/12/2021 20:21

Oh yes, soft drinks without artificial sweeteners! SO much better.

MummyJ12 · 07/12/2021 20:24

That I was younger, with better skin! 😂
Proper tins of Roses chocolates
No social media/selfies/trolling
Body Shop baskets/milk bath/Barbara Daly make-up and Dewberry or White Musk perfume
Benetton sweatshirts (so cozy)
It was pre-COVID!

MummyJ12 · 07/12/2021 20:28

Does anyone remember the McDonald’s McRib?!

Scarby9 · 07/12/2021 20:33

Club biscuits - much more chocolatey.

Grants for university, including travel grants - my generation had such educational opportunities.

Playing out, dawn till dusk, from the age of 4 or 5 with all the other children on the roads. Learning social skills of friendship, settling disputes and developing collaborative plans, all without any adult oversight or interference.

GrumpyTerrier · 07/12/2021 20:34

Kids TV. Belle & Sebastian, Cities of Gold, The Biscuits, The Ewoks cartoon, Gummy Bears, Kimba the white lion, Dungeons and Dragons, Knightmare, Chocky, Wordy/Dark Towers, the Tripods (terrifed me!).

Proper quality stuff that I have enjoyed rewatching as an adult.

Sex. Was brilliant 30 years ago. Last few cocks I’ve encountered have made me wish I’d had a cup of Horlicks instead.

(I hate horlicks)

🤣🤣 Definitely this

Curly wurlies

Pickles89 · 07/12/2021 20:46

The board game Monopoly was better too! They've twitched at the chance cards - no more 'Go Back To Old Kent Road'?!! And more 'Advance To Station' cards where you have to pay twice the amount? If it aint broke don't fix it Hasbro!!

Clothes - better quality, more natural fibres, more choice - more shops!. ‘Made in Britain’ being commonplace and a sign of quality.

Going to pubs and clubs knowing there was a set opening and closing time so everyone was on the same schedule. Sunday afternoon post-pub parties, lunches and outings.

Tea breaks were a thing and the whole team could sit around for 10 or 15 minutes with instant coffee - shared more information that way than social media ever will!

PeskyRooks · 07/12/2021 20:50

Monster munch-bigger with taller bags
Care bears-new ones are weird
Buckaroo- modern one is tackier and you can put all the stuff on easily and it doesn't't buck at all!
Pop stars- if you watch Do They know It's Christmas video now they look like a bunch of scruffy randoms off the street! They had personalities! Not the over groomed plastic people like today.
And that's another thing- watching the video of a song when it came out so exciting!

StarCourt · 07/12/2021 20:50

Christmas! Our family lived relatively close to each other so there was a family party Christmas Night, Boxing Night, a birthday party on 28 Dec and a party on New Yrs Eve

lollipoprainbow · 07/12/2021 20:52

@PeskyRooks yes proper pop stars, the 80's pop stars were awesome !

Funnylittlefloozie · 07/12/2021 20:53

Proper pick and mix with boiled sweets, not the horrible jellified goo-lumps they sell as pick & mix now.

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 07/12/2021 20:56

Domestic appliances and everything else being made to last or at least cost effective to get repaired.

Cheap tat not being so readily available and CHEAP!

Sweets, juice, crisps and junk food being a treat.

SpringIsSprung1 · 07/12/2021 20:58

Badabingbadabum · 07/12/2021 21:12

I'll add to my earlier Dairy Milk: Sellotape. If I buy branded tape it is because I expect it to be worth the money! Not flake down my thumb nails and split into tiny narrow bits. I'm getting Scotch tape next and if that's awful then I will refuse to wrap any more presents.

Tea breaks still are a thing in NZ - and I would fight to defend them!
