Clever crafty people of mumsnet. Quickest way to turn gloves into fingerless gloves without them unravelling to nothing

Really need fingerless gloves for tomorrow. Was directed to B&M but alas they didn’t have any so I’ve purchased three pairs of ‘cheap and cheerfuls’ to adapt. Now I’m used to sewing but I’m thinking of quick ways to stop the unravelling. My brain is thinking glue it even melting the ends as I’m sure the material is plastic. The other side of me is thinking shall I very carefully see each finger and risk being mighty annoyed when my son loses one.

Any thoughts?

I've never done this, but I am crafty/a sewer so this is what I would do:

  • Push each finger end down inside the finger to the length you want
  • sew by hand, using back stitch but not too tight, around each folded finger end.
  • then turn the gloves inside out and snip off the tips.
This will make it much easier to sew as you won't have the fraying cut edge moving around everywhere. You could use a contrasting bright embroidery thread, or just matching normal thread.

I wouldn't do the burning thing as it's hard to control and will probably leave horrible hard plastic scratchy bits (and smell bad)

But if in a massive rush I would just snip off and paint the edges with cleat nail polish.

Great idea from @MrsMadderRose but if it's just for a one off activity I think I'd snip and use just a little PVA or nail varnish. Would it be the end of the world if it unravelled a bit or do they need to last a while?

Alternatively cut off just the very end and see if you can unravel it. You might find you are left with a neat little row of loops at the top after a bit of unravelling, and you could run a bit of wool or thin elastic through them and tie together (loosely of course) to secure them.

No idea if this would actually work though. Very smart of you to buy more than one pair!

I was going to suggest snip off the ends and use blanket stitch around them. But @MrsMadderRose's suggestion is better.

Great ideas!!!! I want them to be worn daily so ideally I’d like to do something with some longevity.

I’m just fiddling with them and they have enough stretch to go under the sewing machine I think which would make it much, much quicker.
