For 9 people for tomorrow. I’d do something with pastry but it would have to be shop bought pastry and I’ve no idea if it’s any good?

Any ideas gratefully welcomed. It can be hot or cold but cold is preferable. TIA

Could you do some Spanish omlettes? They can be served hot or prepared today to serve cold?

I use sliced and lightly fried tinned potatoes (they hold their shape best in the omlettes!) plus sliced and lightly fried onions. V simple but lovely. Cook on low temperature.

What about a pot of dahl in a slow cooker to serve it hot?

How about lukewarm?Grin
mezze cake. Use a GF flatbread or wrap for the base.

I'd make something vegetarian that is naturally gluten-free,
Something like tofu and veg skewers

Stuffed veg - tomatoes filled with a rice+veg mix

burgers

Couscous isn't gluten free!

GF pastry is fine, OP, just remember to check ingredients of your ingredients as gluten is in stuff you might not expect if you're not used to checking for it.

Crustless quiche, that way you don't need to worry about pastry. If it's got onions in, it'll be tasty.

Cutelittlesquizzer · 06/12/2021 11:10

Thanks everyone. It has to be totally gf as one guest is coeliac. I am being v careful and making sure ive cleaned surfaces, chopping boards, knives and baking tray etc. I’m going to do a gf quiche.

Just a thought @Cutelittlesquizzer, but one of the regular complaints at buffets is that the omnivores will help themselves to the vege options, leaving not enough to go round so I'd make loads more than I think is needed

londonmummy1966 · 06/12/2021 14:41

Stuffed portobello mushrooms - make a stuffing mix from the chopped stalks plus a handful of chestnut mushrooms, pesto and goats cheese. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes

Sorry, I'm not sure the gluten free pastry will be much good for a quiche, the jus rol puff pastry is passable for sausage rolls or a pie topper. I've never had much joy with any of the genius pastry's.

I make my own gluten free shortcrust pastry for pies (happy to share recipe if wanted). It acts just like regular pastry but does need a really good egg wash on top.

Most of the supermarkets have a reasonable selection of gluten free party food in the freezer - mozzarella sticks etc

Wharbutons gluten free tiger bread loaf or what buttons soft square gluten free rolls could be used for sandwiches.

Asda do good gluten free crackers to go with a cheese board and get some fancy antipasti to go with it.

Fancy stuffed jacked potatoes with loads of trimmings like coleslaw

Frittata (or 'crustless quiche)

Lidl do Pringle type crisps that are gluten free if you are wanting that sort of thing.

Thanks so much everyone. I couldnt get any gf shortcrust pastry. There was only jus roll puff. So I'm going to do shallot, mushroom and gruyère tarts and hope the pastry is ok. I'm making lots because everyone is mainly veggie. The free-from section was really low on stuff today.

I have found the base of the gf puff pastry gets really hard when making a savoury tart thing. It may just be me being an inept cook but you might want to keep an eye on it.

Pastmybest. I'm a really inept cook. I'll watch it like s hawk thanks .

That's my experience too. It's almost more like a (hard) filo pastry than a puff pastry.

I find it puffs up better if it's something you can put decorative slits in like sausage rolls.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 06/12/2021 19:01

Quick warning about that particular pastry, it leaks oil everywhere

Genius is the easiest to cook with and is found in the freezer section

I’ve used both to make quiches and pasties as we are a coeliac vegetarian family just put a drip tray underneath as it really does leak oil

For buffets I often do mini quiches, pasties, sausage rolls (heck do vegi gf sausages) mini pizza’s etc. M&S also do samosa’s and spring rolls that are GF and veggie and I make bhajiis too. We like a buffet in our house Grin

Cutelittlesquizzer · 06/12/2021 19:05

Do you think I could use the mushroom/onion and gruyere filling to make little Rolls or pasties? If the gf stuff goes like a board would that probably help it be more edible? I really appreciate this info having never used it before.

Unlikely

My experience of the jus rol gf pastry is that you can't handle it too much otherwise it just breaks into tiny pieces.

I can't imagine doing anything with it other than flopping it over a pie filling or folding it over some sausage meat/ cheese onion and potato filling.

Definitely rolling. Pasties might be doable.

Cutelittlesquizzer · 06/12/2021 21:06

pastabest. Thanks. Right I'll just go for the tart plan and hope it doesn't end up like a piece of card with a topping on.
