Just back from walking our dog....this was clearly the 'lights up' weekend....the streets look lovely!

not keen on a mix of warm white/cool white though...one or the other looks better

some lovely looking houses...some slightly overdone

i really want a lit wreath now to match the lit tree I put outside

The houses in my village generally are lit up but quite minimal light displays and the odd few with big displays of snowmen and Santa.
The village next to ours though is like a winter wonderland, bright and very bold lights in alot of houses, that village is quite a famous, historic place and the locals take pride in making it a bit of a tourist attraction at Christmas, especially for the local schoolkids to enjoy. I think it looks fab.

daisypond · 05/12/2021 22:35

No one has really started where I live, though I did see a few people carrying Christmas trees home today. I could see one had a tree up in the window but it hadn’t yet been decorated. It’s still early December.

The best they have been in years. Here is a picture of the Town Hall.

Only 2 houses in our street with Christmas lights up, inside or out. Mine is one of them.

Blossom64265 · 05/12/2021 22:43

About half of our neighborhood is professionally lit. Almost all extremely tasteful. I feel like a massive under-achiever with my one lit wreath. .

I agree that the mix of warm and cool white is jarring. I massively prefer the warm. I think sometimes people don’t even realize when they are buying that they have to think about it. We have one neighbor that does a small herd of lighted deer. One broke this year and the replacement is the wrong shade.

torquewench · 05/12/2021 22:44

I think my neighbours are related to the Griswalds.

mnahmnah · 05/12/2021 22:46

There’s been a marked increase last year and this year. Including us. Anything to brighten things up in a pandemic! All done very nicely. Last year was particularly nice as it was a surprise and lovely for evening walks with the DC when nothing else was happening

hollyivysaurus · 05/12/2021 22:47

Our street is the OTT street that gets cars driving down it to see. Our house is quite minimalist, just a few twinkly lights in the window, but I bloody love the neighbours who go all out. It looks tacky as hell (there are inflatables, projectors and all sorts!) and I’m sure most of Mumsnet would hate it, but it looks so cheerful and the children think it’s wonderful that it really makes me smile! I don’t envy them their electricity bills though!!

ParkheadParadise · 05/12/2021 22:50

The street next to me was on the local news on Friday night.
All the neighbours have got together and decorated all the houses. It looks fab.

Forion · 05/12/2021 23:01

Virtually nothing.

Amandasummers · 05/12/2021 23:05

Got a few where I am, personally, mines the best 🤣 a lady stopped her car and reversed yesterday when I was outside to tell me that she spotted mine out of the corner of her eye earlier so specifically drove this way home instead for a better look and she wanted to tell me it looks beautiful and well done.

I feel I have now achieved all that there is to achieve ladies and gentleman. My work here, is done takes a bow 🤣

SillyBlueHat · 05/12/2021 23:06

I quite like a mix of cool and warm lights! It's something different.

But then I like the multi coloured ones too. As my kids are growing up and leaning towards more adult tastes, I'm regressing and squeal with delight when spotting a massively over the top light display. I used to prefer the subtle, warm lights.

Thankyou. I claim no credit as I just took the picture. But I know a lot of effort (and money) went into creating this look.

MrsBerthaRochester · 06/12/2021 09:14

There is one house in our street who go all out at Halloween and Xmas. Inflatables, lights, music. It is in no way tasteful but the kids love it.
I used to date a guy who lived in an area where EVERY house had blue tasteful lights. I found it creepy in a stepford wives kind of way and used to wind him up about it.

EventOfTheSeason · 06/12/2021 09:19

There's only a few on our street. A bit of a mix so far but not a lot for a huge street. We didn't live here last Christmas so it's quite exciting sad I know

Animood · 06/12/2021 09:20

People have some reasonable Xmas lights in the street. Quite nice really.

Then there are my mental neighbours who have had full Xmas decs up since Jan 2019 when I moved in.

Yes, three years and counting. Grin

LittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 07/12/2021 00:55

I'm loving the door surrounds. Seem popular.... thick strip of lights covering all the door frame

I especially love a local multicolour one, looks like the contents of the old fashioned quality st

< inserts brag about how tasteful my neighbourhood is>

Bloodybridget · 07/12/2021 01:12

I bought a string of white bulb lights and put them over the bin store and along the railings yesterday - apart from our NDNs who have little coloured lights in a tree, I think we're the only house in the street with outdoor lights, and I wonder if people will think we're weird!

immersivereader · 07/12/2021 01:13

Live in North America so a good blend of utter cheese, class and inflatable grinches etc. Love it

Champagneforeveryone · 07/12/2021 02:06

I live in an extremely naice village, where respectable middle class people go about their respectable middle class business, never troubling one another and doing their utmost not to draw attention to themselves or be seen as outlandish in any sense.

Then December starts and they lose all decorum. It fascinates me as they compete with one another over who can put up the most extravagant Christmas lights, each year becoming more and more unrestrained. By mid December we look like a miniature version of Oxford Street (but with more cows)

Come the new year and the lights are dutifully taken down and stored safely for the following year. My neighbours go back to their mild mannered, middle class ways and there is no inkling of the carnival that has gone before Grin

Hen2018 · 07/12/2021 08:28

The usual 3 houses in the village have their lights up. The other 15 still haven’t bought any!

LittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 08/12/2021 15:16

@Champagneforeveryone that's so funny!!

The 2 young lads in nearby flats have tastefully decorated the garden area. They were out doing it on Saturday morning which amazed me as they are not usually 'community minded' if you catch my drift!!

The effort they put in has made me look at them in a new light
