How common is it for new glasses to be wrong?

GlitterBiscuits · 05/12/2021 17:00

Long term reading glasses wearer. I went to pick up my new pair yesterday but the left lens left everything very blurred while the right was perfect.
I had distance glasses for the first time too and they were also wrong the same way. So you can imagine how much money I have spent to come away with nothing ( so far)
It's Specsavers but they have been fine every time before.
All they could suggest was another eye test. I haven't heard of anyone being given glasses they couldn't see with before.

Specsavers will sort it out, take them back, they have a great customer satisfaction policy, they will check prescription etc. If necessary you could have another test to check the prescription.

GlitterBiscuits · 05/12/2021 19:21

I left both pairs at the shop. It was instantly obvious they were wrong.
They didn't suggest anything other than a retest. Last test was 3 weeks ago, I don't think anything has changed in me.

Possibly a typo on the prescription then? That would seem the most obvious from the comments.

It's happened to me a few times. Twice at Boots.

The retest is needed in case there has been an error, if it’s a typo it will become clear when you have another test.

Shitzngiggles · 05/12/2021 19:51

@Beebopawhop that maybe so but as a customer I've got the choice to not use a certain service or shop if I've lost confidence in them. No big deal.

HeddaGarbled · 05/12/2021 19:57

they work out the prescription based on what the patient says and not everyone is reliable with their answers

Yes, I’ve always thought this was an unscientific way of coming up with a prescription. Once you’ve tried to decide ‘better like this ……. or like this?’ 20 times, it all starts to look the same.

Fuuuuuckit · 05/12/2021 20:06

I've been wearing glasses for 35 years, had a couple of wierd prescriptions in that time, one from Boots and one from Specsavers. I had a new eye test for both and a no-quibble new prescription, no bother at all.

RhubarbCustardy · 05/12/2021 20:09

Boots got mine wrong too. Had a total refund. A few years later, my 2 pairs of glasses from Vision Express caused the edges of doors to become 'bowed' when I looked at them wearing my glasses. They offered a free eye test but after them continuing not to answer the phone, I have given up and going to try Specsavers.

Therefore, my response is, yes, its common. Go back and make sure they correct it. Make a fuss if they don't. Your eyesight is important.

WarmSausageTea · 05/12/2021 20:10

I had this with specsavers, as did DM. They put things right, but clearly gave zero shits about it, and we’ve not been back since. I also had this last year with Boots, who took a lot more time to make sure the problem was put right.

Bottom line, if they don’t feel right, they’re not right.

squirrelnutkins1 · 05/12/2021 20:19

I had this recently but after a week they're fine. Has your prescription changed?
When I put them on it felt like the right lens was fogged up.
Like I say after a week they're ok, just my eyes adjusting. I was really worried they were wrong though.
This was also specsavers.

FantasticMax · 05/12/2021 20:24

I had this! I’m short sighted and one pair of glasses I’d ordered (from Specsavers) were really off and blurry. The staff told me that sometimes it takes a few weeks for your eyes to adjust. That was nonsense but I felt like I had to trust them? When I complained they just said they had the lenses tested and they matched up with what had been ordered. I ended up getting a separate eye test and brand new glasses which I had to pay for. This was a few years ago but I recall that the prescription remained roughly the same but the new glasses were completely different and did the job for my sight.

Ellmau · 06/12/2021 00:28

It happened to me once - they gave me a new pair that was worse than the old one. Took ages, but I eventually got a refund and went elsewhere for a replacement,, as I had lost confidence in the optician.

Hairyfriend · 06/12/2021 01:00

I had this with specsavers and will never use them again!

Gave 1st pair of frames in for new lenses, 2 weeks later on return I queried that my sight was exactly the same and no clearer. The 'old' lenses were in the bag and they assured me they'd changed them. I gave in my 2nd pair- waited another 2 weeks and the same thing. I had to speak to a manger to get the pair tested on their machine to check the prescription.

They had 'replaced' both frames with the exact same prescription!!! I then had the inconvenience of having to hand in each pair yet again and wait. There was barely an apology and after writing a polite, but factual letter letter to management- they offered me £20 off contact lenses- if I'd sign up to regular, monthly orders!!! No discount for the £200+ I'd paid to replace my glasses lenses they'd cocked up!!!

DinosApple · 06/12/2021 07:24

I've had it once, mostly recently, with Boots. I always use Boots so it's just one of those things.

Mine was .25 out on one eye - I can't remember which. But when I put my glasses on it was blurry in the far distance. Glasses should make things crystal clear so I knew it was wrong. Wearing them also made me extremely dizzy and gave me headaches. Boots wanted me to persist for a few weeks in case my eyes needed to settle Hmm. I wasn't impressed with that as I've been wearing glasses since for 30 years, and I've always adjusted to new specs by the time I've walked out of the shop.

I gave it a week, but I couldn't drive wearing them and insisted. It was the dizziness and headaches that caused me most problems. It was like being drunk and the room spinning slightly all the time.

They retested my eyes, didn't admit they got it wrong but changed the prescription slightly, and then changed the two pairs I ordered for nothing.

Take them back OP, they should be making things better, not worse.

Billandben444 · 06/12/2021 07:25

I also had this with specsavers and will never use them again as they were rude and dismissive and just said my eyes must have changed in 2 weeks. They didn't offer any free solution as it was so obviously down to me - disgusting.

Lowlifeinhighplaces · 06/12/2021 07:37

I have just returned 2 pairs back to Asda, and normally they are great (and have recommended them here). They were wrongly centred according to the dispensing assistant, but I could not get an appointment to see the optician for over a week. No, not suitable for me and have not got the time to be going backwards and forwards, so told then in no uncertain terms I was having a refund as I could not wear either pair. Went into the shop, got a refund no problem.

Unlike Specsavers a few years ago, who were as un helpful as they could be. I have worn glasses for many years and know when they are not right and to be told this is normal and they would be fine in a couple of weeks, er no I cannot see and they have gave me an instant headache, refund after a lot of huffing and puffing.

Boots have usually been very good, but the prices are now to high (I have a high prescription so need high index lenses) and I find the upselling off putting.

Just ask for a refund and dont take no for an answer if your not happy

HidingFromDD · 06/12/2021 07:55

used vision express, boots and specsavers in last 12 years. all provided glasses which weren't 'right' initially but was told to 'let my eyes get used to them' (have varifocals and astigmatism so complicated). it wasn't until I used my local independent a few months ago and got a pair of glasses that were perfect that I realised how bad the others were. He was actually horrified at how far out the prescription was on the boots pair

Freddofan · 06/12/2021 08:36

I had a pair that always felt wrong, and I was worried about taking them back so just wore my others. This time the optician made me promise I’d take them back immediately if there was a problem - I think they have an arrangement with the people that actually fabricate the lenses , but only for a few weeks after supply. My hubby took one pair of glasses back 3 times ! You should only pay once.

SnarkyBag · 06/12/2021 08:42

Mine felt wrong and when I took them back turned out the hadn’t done the measurement part at all.

SunsetSmartmeter · 06/12/2021 08:45

It happened to me once, about 30 years ago when I was 16, as you can see I've never forgotten it! It was glaringly obvious & they changed the lenses for me with no second sight test.
