How can I buy a small amount of shares?

This is probably a really basic question. DS is hugely interested in business and for the past two Christmases, he's asked for a small number of shares. He follows the markets closely and I think wants a part of it. I have resisted but not really sure why not least because he's so consistent in his request. If I were to buy him a small quantity of shares (say £50), how on earth would I go about doing this? I literally have no idea where to start and I'd really appreciate any pointers.

Thanks!

You should also buy him some pb so he can see how they are stagnant and his isa starts to grow.

I also use Freetrade. It's micro investing for someone like me - I only put pennies in really!

If anyone is interested, here's a referral link for a free share. My joining freebie share is in Robotics.

Another idea - why not give him a £50 "voucher" on which you promise to buy him £50 worth of shares in any company he chooses, maybe together with a copy of the Saturday FT, or if you're feeling more generous,a three-month subscription to the Investors' Chronicle.

Then he gets a bit of responsibility in making the choice.

Although it's not a very efficient way to invest because of the fees, the great thing about only investing fifty quid is that it really doesn't matter if the company crashes and burns!

@MrsMcCluskeysCat I would be interested in your link please? Thanks

I can’t recommend buying shares unless you know what you are doing, buy a stocks and shares ISA instead. It’s easy to loose money, not just on the share price but trading costs as well.
Be aware that share or finance trading can very quickly turn to gambling, so try to keep a discrete close eye on what he is doing and don’t lend your money on a sure fire certain profit.

Here's my link for Freetrade. My first free share I got from a link on here was Astra Zeneca worth £70!

I get a free share too when you join, and you need to add £1 to get your free share, but don't need to spend that £1.

I'm buying and selling a few every week and am up to £500 now for about £280 spending.

RogueV · 05/12/2021 22:00

Freetrade.

Love that he's interested! No idea where/how but there are free practice ones may help before he invests?

Mosbiusdesigns · 05/12/2021 22:13

@MrsMcCluskeysCat

Freetrade, you can invest as little as £1 (and if you know someone who uses it you will get a free share worth £2-200 on signing up). I can share my link but understand if you don't want to use it just let me know!
PM me your link please Smile
