Christmas door decorating Instagram

Anyone else find the Christmas door decorating trend by celebs on Instagram totally obscene and unnecessary. Some of them must of cost an absolute fortune!
I love a good aesthetic and will happily spend money on nice things but these doors which look old style department store Christmas displays are too much! Particularly when lots of people who follow them will try and spend money to emulate it and many people are choosing between food and fuel this Christmas. For some Instagrammers it seems at odds with their usual ‘we are millionaires but pretend to be like you guys’ vibe! Especially as if I decorated my front door (no gates here) it would probably all be nicked within a few days 😆

Honestly, I think stretching yourself financially to copy something seen on Instagram is evidence of a really low level of intelligence.

Moonopoly · 05/12/2021 15:48

I’m not sure that’s fair. I think Instagram (for some people) sets what they ‘should be’ doing at Christmas without giving the caveat that your average Joe can’t afford those things

I’ve missed this trend (don’t use Instagram much). I like a good wreath but the students would probably nick anything more dramatic than that where I live.

I still hold to my point. If you let some vacuous celebrity’s decorations set your ‘should be’s, then you probably shouldn’t be in control of your own finances.

BleuJay · 05/12/2021 16:05

Only in Mumsnet is it frowned upon for someone to be well off.

No one, I repeat no one is forcing anyone to copy them.

If a celeb or anyone on Instagram wants to decorate their front door with swans dipped in gold and adorned with diamonds and post a picture of it, so be it.

Sitting at home bemoaning the fact that your front door is somewhat lacking by comparison and is making you feel so depressed that you need to take a loan out to try and copy them means you have very few brain cells as already mentioned by a previous poster.

You have to also understand that many of these celebs especially the Stacey Solomon types, earn a lucrative living from their Instagram posts by posting photographs of their decor by way of sponsorship, advertising and getting given stuff.

Utter nonsense.
JaninaDuszejko · 05/12/2021 16:13

I follow a LOT of interior accounts on instagram and there's been more instawankiness on the mantle decorations than the doors this year. Lots have been sent wreaths but nothing fancier. I'll still buy my usual wreath from our nearest florist (who is fab but based in the north so not outrageously expensive).

Cofifeefee · 05/12/2021 16:16

Seriously if people are in the situation of choosing between fuel and food, I really doubt decorating their front door to instagram standards would be high on their list of priorities.

Different people have different incomes and different levels of discretionary spending. Adults generally understand this.

JaneJeffer · 05/12/2021 16:19

Storm Barra will put a stop to it.

SoupDragon · 05/12/2021 16:26

...without giving the caveat that your average Joe can’t afford those things

If you need a caveat, then you can't be very bright, surely? I would have thought most people see it, realise its ridiculously expensive and work out how to do the idea much more cheaply.

Can you post an example?

Poochnewbie1 · 05/12/2021 16:44

@Notwithittoday I think it looks amazing!!

I’m a total Christmas lover and would love to be able to go all out like this. However, I am in touch enough with my finances and hopefully my own sense to know that for one, I cannot afford to do that and secondly, even if I could it’s not what is going to make my Christmas special. I love looking at these things but don’t feel the pressure to do the same and certainly don’t see them as a standard to aim for.

Notwithittoday · 05/12/2021 17:02

I think it’s does give you ideas for colours etc. I quite fancy making a bauble wreath in those colours and could probably do it cheaply

gingerbreadmuffin · 05/12/2021 17:06

I'm not in Instagram but I do love a good Christmas door decoration.
I totally raid pinterest every year as well for ideas for mine so Instagram would just be an extension of this?

Didiusfalco · 05/12/2021 17:08

Can you post some? - I love looking at this kind of thing

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 05/12/2021 17:09

I walk past a house on the way to work which has a gert big red bow on the door.

Like, the whole door.

But no other decorations. No lights or anything.

Just the massive bow.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 05/12/2021 17:13

Not seen this at all in real life or online. Only door bows (which I really don't like) and wreaths

BarbaraofSeville · 05/12/2021 17:59

Seriously?

Does no-one have a mind of their own any more?

BarbaraofSeville · 05/12/2021 18:00

Yes, the door bows seems to be the 'thing' this year. I've seen loads of those IRL, that is.
