Anyone experienced in shoulder injuries around?

10 year ago had an anterior dislocation after fall on outstretched hand, reduced in theatre.

Have had periods of physio since due to occasional pain/ clunking.

Past few weeks clunking in and out and pain become more frequent ( have fallen twice but no obvious shoulder injury)

Today laid on sofa with arm at 90 degrees, twisted hand and shoulder slipped out Sad
Managed to massage shoulder and twist forearm and it clunked back in.

What do I need to do?
Immobilise?
Sling?
Keep it moving?
Get checked out?

It’s such a hideous feeling Sad

www.nhs.uk/conditions/dislocated-shoulder/

You need to seek medical help.

Also, why have you fallen twice recently? Is that something that needs checking also?

KittenCatcher · 05/12/2021 13:53

Ouch get it checked out to make sure its back i the correct position

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 05/12/2021 14:04

@Olliesocks once was as I’d stacked stuff on the stairs and came down them in the dark Hmm
Other just a cockel on an uneven paver!

I had a dislocation like this two years ago.
and it is still very unstable. Physio says that in order to improve things I need to do physio twice a day until it stops.
Do you have physio exercises to do?

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 05/12/2021 14:26

@SmallGreenStripes I’m going to ring physio tomorrow.

Just not sure what I should be doing until they can see me?

From the perspective of a paramedic, go get it checked out. ASAP. Go to your nearest walk in centre. Rotate paracetomol and ibrufen until you have been seen to reduce the pain. Flowers

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 05/12/2021 14:40

@Mammma91 thankyou for your post, from a paramedic pov what would they do if I went to be seen?
It’s def back in socket and was non traumatic?
Just aching now and hurts in certain positions.

It popped in and out Briefly in bed a few years ago and I went to minor injuries who didn’t recommend anything.

Sounds similar to what I did when I was 16 and I’ve had periods when it’s popped out and back in several times over the years (am 43 now). Last time I popped it out I went to A&E the day after as it was still really painful (idiot tried to do a pop handstand at gymnastics and ended up in a heap on the floor Confused). They x-rayed it to make sure it was properly back in, and sent me to physio for 6 weeks.
I’ve now come to terms with the fact that if I want it to stay put, I need to keep up with my physio permanently. A desk job just doesn’t offer enough exercise to keep my muscles strong enough to hold it in place.
Hope you feel better soon - it’s a sickening feeling!

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 05/12/2021 15:08

@Namechangeno25788 yes physio did say to continue with exercises lifelong when I saw her 2years ago but it improved and life got busy Hmm

Such a terrible feeling, scares me that it might happen again! It was out for 12 hours after first time as they were waiting for a theatre slot Xmas Shock
I remember telling the Sister in A+E that if they didn’t put it back soon, someone would have to shoot me in my morphine haze Xmas Grin

Yeah I know the feeling! My last one was only about 3 years ago and I haven’t done any physio in about 2 years Xmas Shock So I know I only have myself to blame when if it happens again.
I’ve always been lucky enough to be able to get it back in myself though. Much to the queasiness I caused in my fellow gym mates!Xmas Grin

The shoulder is not a very stable joint, as it is largely ligaments and muscles holding it in place. Once these have been stretched by recurrent dislocation it is hard to "cure". My husband had surgery (Bankart procedure) to stabilise the joint and it hasn't dislocated since (14 yrs ago). Before that it was popping out when he turned over in bed.

If you work for the NHS you might be able to get quick access to physio, but also bear in mind what could happen if it dislocated while you were in the middle of something at work? No-one is indispensable and if you don't look after yourself, no-one else will!

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 05/12/2021 17:03

@tatyr yes we do have physio through work, will ring tommorow.

I wonder if some physio tape would help?

They will need to check if it's gone back in correctly and not trapped anything

My DS dislocated his and it went back in and his GP didnt believe him as he said he 'would be in pain more'

Cue 7 more dislocations before he had surgery and a further 7 before second lot of surgery
