Do you have shutters in your living room?

We’re redecorating and I think they look great, but I’m worried about the room being too cold without curtains to keep the draft out.

Are you happy with yours?

I don't have shutters in this house, but a previous Victorian flat had them. They were brilliant for reducing drafts and external noise. Would love to have them again.

I have them throughout - no curtains. I love them.
They block out as much light as you want.

SilverGlassHare · 04/12/2021 20:15

We have them, they were there when we moved it. I don’t know how much warmer it would be with curtains (we also have hard floors) and I didn’t love them at first but I’ve grown to like the clean lines and how you can block the sun out on hot days. We mostly have them shut but slanted open (IYSWIM) in summer and winter and fully folded open in spring and autumn.

In my view they are better than long curtains which block the heat from the radiator

HermioneWeasley · 04/12/2021 20:18

Gosh, so many replies so quickly - thank you!

Our radiator is on the other side of the room so curtains don’t interfere

I’m sat here with bare windows and I can’t work out what difference (if any) shutters will make

I also have them throughout the house and I love them 🙂

AmandaHugenkiss · 04/12/2021 20:21

Ours definitely keep the heat in better than the curtains did but we have draughty old Victorian sash windows. They also look fab.

SW1amp · 04/12/2021 20:24

We had them installed on awful old single glazed windows and they made a huge difference at reducing draughts and cold until we were able to afford new windows

They are perfect for getting privacy without losing light during the day also

Dougieowner · 04/12/2021 20:28

We had shutters fitted all around our previous house and liked them so much we are having them in the new one (when we eventually move in).
At first I wasn't keen on not having curtains (I was worried about noise and lack of cosiness) but it worked very well but then again we did have triple glazing.

We are having both shutters and curtains in the new house mainly as the house (a new build) has high ceilings and I definitely don't want bare walls around the (shuttered) windows. Cost of both shutters & curtains is hideous but I think (hope!) it will be worth it.

gamerchick · 04/12/2021 20:28

Ah man I proper covet shutters. They're the dogs bollocks.

JerkintheMerkin · 04/12/2021 21:49

They are very good at keeping out draughts and deadening sound. My bedroom faces a main junction and now the traffic sounds much further away. I love them.

EllieSattler · 04/12/2021 21:51

Not only are they brilliant for keeping out draughts they are fantastic for keeping the room as cool as possible in the height of summer.

Love mine but I have big sash windows & lots of sun in the morning.

ronniz · 04/12/2021 21:58

They are good for warmth

ronniz · 04/12/2021 22:00

I have them in the bedrooms too & have a some curtains that don't do much but I like the look of curtains.

ronniz · 04/12/2021 22:02

I don't like the look of them on more modern houses but they are very practical.

Tig33 · 04/12/2021 22:02

Are you talking about plantation style shutters? Thank have a Victorian flat without original shutters and would love to get shutters but unsure what style to go for. I had the original shutters in the living room of my old flat and they were great (but needed renovation really) so wonder how easy and how costly it would be to install shutters in my current flat

ronniz · 04/12/2021 22:03

@Tig33 mine cost about £500 per window during the jan sales. That was for tier on tier.

ronniz · 04/12/2021 22:04

Thats was 5 yrs ago though at least.
