Can anyone help me read a glasses prescription

I have varifocals for everyday use, but have decided I'd like to get some cheap reading glasses for when I'm at home. Popped in to opticians to get a copy of my prescription and this is what he wrote... can anyone make sense of it for me please?

I think it's:

Right eye, –0.5D distance correction (SPHERE), –0.5D astigmatism correction (CYL) at 150 (AXIS — the angle the astigmatism correction is at).

Left eye, –1D SPH, –0.5D CYL, 30 AXIS.

+1.75D close vision correction, for the reading part, same in both eyes.

Does that make sense?

The reading add is +1.75 so that’s the reading strength but you have to take the distance off, and you have an astigmatism.
So
R eye would be +1.25 (+the astigmatism prescription but I assume you are asking for off the shelf?)
L eye would be + 0.75 (+ astigmatism)

So maybe split the difference & try a +1.00 ready reader if you can’t read without your varifocals on.

I can’t remember enough about astigmatism figures to say if not having it would bother you, I’m ok with ready readers but I’m not home to check the strength of my astigmatism.

Yes. Used to be a dispenser for a number of opticians.

It is:
R - 0.50 / - 0.50 x 150
L - 1.00 / - 0.50 x 30

Reading add +1.75

If you were wearing your cheap readers alone, they might not need to be as strong as the add on your glasses, but it's probably best to try on a couple of the premade pairs and see what feels good?

Rodders92 · 04/12/2021 13:46

Your reading prescription would be

Right +1.25/-0.50 axis 150

Left +0.75/-0.50 axis 30

If you want ready readers try a +1

KatieKate56 · 04/12/2021 13:50

You won't notice -0.50 amount of astigmatism uncorrected if you're only reading for a short period of time in ready readers.

As PP said, I'd try +1.00 ready readers.

You have to half the astigmatism and add to the sphere to find what your 'rough' sphere is.

Thank you all so much. I thought he was going to do a print out and was a bitConfused when he wrote it

That's quite normal — mine gives out all prescriptions handwritten, on a form designed for the purpose, like this. Even when I've been to chain places, they do a little printed sticker that's stuck to a form designed to be filled out by hand. So if you came in wanting an impromptu note of your prescription, handwriting it doesn't strike me as particularly unusual?
