Failed music exam

How do you console a student who has failed their Grade 1 practical music exam? I've been teaching this student for 2 years now (from complete beginner) and I felt she was ready, albeit a bit rocky perhaps on her pieces if she didn't count etc. But she'd worked super hard and knew how to play everything, scales included etc (provided she concentrated!)

Turns out she failed/didn't pass and I feel absolutely awful as obviously I'm her teacher and I take responsibility for it... Turns out she hadn't been counting properly and so her rhythms were out, and there were lots of note errors through her pieces. I just feel so bad and not entirely sure what to do / say to console her / her parents.

Which instrument is it and how old is the child? Did they do a Prep Test at all?

FeelSoAwful · 04/12/2021 13:47

Piano, Grade 1 and yes they did do a Prep Test a year before and did well at that. Age wise the student is in Year 7.

Perhaps they went to pieces with nerves. It's really quite difficult to fail at that level. It's not your fault, particularly if they did well in the Prep test.

COunting properly overall or just in the exam

If so exams may not be for them and just teach them how to play for fun

It does perhaps sound like nerves got the better of her.
At that age and after 2 years with a child that’s practicing hard I would have expected a pass at grade 1.
Agree also that maybe exams are not for her.

How about considering the remote-video recorded performance exam option for a re-take? 4 pieces, no other tests, can record it at home. Much less stage fright-y!

What age is year 7?

After 2 years and a lot of prep for the exam then I would expect a pass. If she has to work that hard at it then maybe it just isnt for her at an exam level. Play for enjoyment but not for examinations.
