That Ancestry DNA thing

I got it for my Dad's birthday, knowing they're not supposed to be very accurate, but a bit of fun for the man who has everything and is interested in his family history.

The results are back. Nothing astounding except the fact that it's uncannily accurate.

85% the small corner of England which we know his family was from, 8% Norway, which would make sense with the Vikings (does it go back that far?) and a bit of Irish.

Plus lots of the family trees from cousins rare people who we dont know but whose own trees do include his grandparents and great grand parents.

Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised, it's clever stuff, but it's all a bit spooky too.

it is all a bit creepy isn't it, when you really think about it. Just think of old Margaret in Milton Keynes rubbing her hands in glee cause she's found your family secret Grin

My dad doesn't know who his dad is and I have a progressive neurological condition that can be hereditary. My mum wanted to buy both me and my dad the dna kits that's also the health prediction thingy (23andme?) Fuck no, we would rather live in ignorance, well I do anyway, not sure bout him but his half sister has done ancestry and included him on it as a full siblling.

My dhs parents were adopted/abandoned and our nephew has had great fun tracking folks down.

I think the coolest thing about these types of kits is that a whole load of cold crime cases have been solved through finding near genetic matches in their DNA databases. They then find the killer/criminal through a process of "genetic genealogy". Not a good time to be a crim!

You may find that your results change. My original results were quite boring however since then they have updated their databases and have more information. Mine is now much more interesting

I did mine, confirmed things I always suspected my mum had lied to me about and within 2 days of matching as a relation to someone, I did a dna test with a man and it confirmed he is my biological father. 33 years of not knowing. Thought I’d go to the grave without knowing.

girafferafferaffe · 04/12/2021 09:32

Originally mine said basically England Scotland and Wales. And I was disappointed.

Now it's broken down in to areas etc by percentage and I am also apparently 1% European Jewish.

I’ve thought about this but not sure it’d tell me anything I don’t know. Most of my ancestry predominantly the north east up into the borders and half of Scotland. I’ve gone quite far back on some of it (Scottish royalty) and still haven’t managed to leave the uk!
Pretty certain there are no skeletons in the closet (but I guess you can never say never!)

But having said that, I am struggling with my mums (Scottish) ancestry and my maternal Grandad was Polish, so not really been able to do this line without costing an arm and a leg.

Maybe that might throw something interesting.
