Blimey I appear to own a bottle of wine that costs £75

This one

19yo DS got it for my birthday. TBH I though it was a bit of a fun gimmick, but the bottle is actually sandy and I have a sand phobia (yes really!) so I don't know what DS was thinking.

I thought I'd pass it on as my Secret Santa gift (a woman famous for her love of red wine) so I Googled it to make sure it met the agreed £20. Surely DS didn't pay £75?! It's the same box with the "free" wine tasting.

Is it actually worth £75? Will the wine be exceptionally good?

If you send it to me I will be happy to organise a free virtual tasting.

@Bonnealle

I’d just pass it on if you don’t like it. The £75 is just an Amazon thing (some things are way overpriced on there!), and it’s part of a package. I would say the wine itself would probably work out to be about £20. Just think of it as saving £20 instead as you don’t have to buy a present. You can then get a decent bottle of wine without the gimmicks for yourself!
It's more expensive on the company's own website

@Soubriquet

You can’t really give that as a secret Santa.

You’ll either get looks because they will assume you’ve majorly overspent and therefore favouritising someone, or you’ll get looks because you’ve regifted it

Sell it on eBay?

I know, that's why I checked the price and I'm glad I did.

Although no one should know where to send the looks....

@TheVolturi

I wouldn't use amazon as a way to work out how much something cost. Their prices are crazy at times, and rise and fall like the sun!
But the price is in line with how much it costs direct from the winery.

@CrumbsThatsQuick

why did your son give you a present with sand on it if you have a sand phobia? is he trying to tell you something Smile
I suspect he just looked on Amazon for "expensive wine". TBF I'm not sure you'd know from the descriptions that it comes with sand

Sell it on eBay. It just looks like a gimmick.

Gearedtoyou · 03/12/2021 18:34

@Yummypumpkin

Well I feel very mean saying this but the cost I think is reflecting the packaging and the 'undersea treasuring' !

It doesn't mention grape varieties, terroir or winemaker....and so whilst I am.sure it will be a wonderful experience and nicer than plonk, I would not get your hopes up too high. But do tell us!

Yes, that's exactly what I would expect. A £10 bottle of wine sold for £20ish because of the gimmick. £75 Shock

Underwater wine? I’ll buy in to it when I see Jilly Goolden snorkelling for her next tipple rather than popping to the offy on the corner….Grin

CaMePlaitPas · 03/12/2021 19:08

I used to work in the industry and the description mentions young fruit, it'll taste bubblegum-y and light, probably a bit like Lambrini. I suspect you're paying for the box, bottle, story and VAT, the liquid in the bottle won't be what makes it £75.

Gingerkittykat · 03/12/2021 19:44

Your son obviously went to a lot of effort to buy you a special gift, how would he feel if you gave it away?

Sit down with him and potentially other people too and get him to hold the bottle and pour it into a glass for you so you don't have to touch the sand.

I don't think there was a lot of effort actually, he just looked on Amazon, but he did apparently spend too much money yes!

We shall have it with Christmas dinner.

Now I need a Secret Santa gift !

The Star Wars references have gone over my head I'm afraid. I'm quite impressed that I knew it was Star WarsGrin
