Does anyone have a written cleaning rota? I really need help.

Years (decade) of MH problems, I suspect I am bipolar had lead me to having a permanently messy house.

I hate it. It makes me feel like absolute shit.

I recently decorated one room and am doing well keeping it nice and the other day I declutgered and cleaned (not deep cleaned which really needs doing) the kitchen.

My DD said to me 'Mum I came downstairs (in the morning for school) and the tree lights were on and everything was SO tidy. It was LOVELY!'

I wanted to cry. I want my whole house to be like that.

:(

I need a schedule or something. Is that a thing?

Try looking at the Organised Mum. You have to have a week of pain deepcleaning and decluttering, but from then on it is a doable regime Monday to Friday.

Just do the whole house, properly, with whichever other humans you live with old enough, on a Sunday morning.

During the week, clean the kitchen counters and sink at least once a day.

Vacuum high traffic areas (hallway, kitchen and wherever you eat/crumbs are dropped) every day.

Put sheets and towels in the washing machine before you start the cleaning on Sunday morning. Move to the tumble dryer when the cycle is finished. Put in bed when cleaning done.

Do laundry as soon as the hamper is full.

Just make it non-negotiable. When you talk yourself out of it is when everything goes to pot. You know it has to be done. Just do it.

If you can get a robot vacuum. I know this is not what you asked, but it will encourage you to keep floors tidy and you don't have to bother hoovering ever

My dog would have a heart attack at a robot vaccum Grin

Thankyou for the links.

I think I may take them as inspiration and write my own up that are more relevant?

Look at flylady - it finally got me organised!

IWasWillingToGoWassailing · 03/12/2021 13:40

Have a look at Flylady - her 31 babysteps to start with are good, because you don't have to take a week off to blitz the house to begin with! Just don't sign up for her emails, you'll drown.

Also come and join us on the Fledglings thread on the Housekeeping board. We are all very friendly and challenged by housework!

ProudlyMarried · 03/12/2021 13:43

Err no. I keep things tidy continuosly, clean spills as they happen, put everything back at the end of the day, and do a full clean every week.

Fallagain · 03/12/2021 13:47

I’ve done a variation of TOMM. Different rooms in different orders. What I like is she say a load of washing done a day and all dishes and then 30 mins maximum on a room.

Then why bother replying?

If I asked 'Does anyone have a rottweiler, I need help with training' would you open the thread and type 'err no, but I have a hamster that's perfectly well behaved'

There's a TOMM app where you can completely customise each day, delete stuff, add your own things, etc. I've rejigged it a bit to suit our household.

The best bit IMO is it leaves your weekends free. We were wasting so much of our weekend blitzing all the built-up jobs whereas now we do nothing at weekends except some laundry and the robot hoover going around. And it means the house is always in good shape, rather than being spotless on Sunday and then back to a mess by Wednesday.

Keys for us are: load of laundry a day, not just in machine but put away; dishwasher on before bed and unloaded in the morning; decluttering before starting out and making sure everything has a 'home'. It's impossible to effectively clean around clutter and it's impossible to tidy clutter if you don't have anywhere for it to go.

If you stick at it it's really effective.

endlesswinter · 03/12/2021 14:31

I used to follow flylady but now loosely follow team tomm ( the organized mum).
I have the app which has a daily motivation podcast, half and hour of tunes to clean to and a list.

I don't do all of it all the time but it definitely helps.

Starcaller · 03/12/2021 14:31

Also I thought my dog would hate the robot hoover as she hates the normal one and is quite skittish generally but weirdly she wasn't bothered at all. It's a lot smaller and quieter. After the first couple of days, she has ignored it.

Jenala · 03/12/2021 14:41

@Starcaller I have the TOMM app but have not stuck to it very well as some is not relevant to me. I haven't been able to find where to edit the tasks, though I did think it must be possible! Can you tell me how to do it? Thanks and sorry to derail thread - OP the organised mum method worked really well when I did it!

If you wanted to do your own maybe make a room a day plus daily tasks such as hoovering or a load of washing etc.

Jenala · 03/12/2021 14:42

@Starcaller the moment I posted I went back on the app and scrolled down far enough to find how to edit it! Blush doh!

Was looking for settings or something in the menu. Anyway, I've found it now!

Starcaller · 03/12/2021 14:43

Yes, that bit isn't very intuitive! Took me ages to find!

maofteens · 03/12/2021 16:05

I got a Decluttering expert in to help - paying for motivation much like a personal trainer! She sells all the old clutter on eBay (or if not sellable give to charity) which meant it was not as expensive as it sounds.
Or if you can do your own pay for a one off deep clean. Then it's a matter of 'don't put it down put it away' attitude and don't go to bed with a dirty kitchen. Maybe once a week put aside two hours to clean the bathrooms and do floors. Your kids can help with some things depending on age.
I'm a big believer in breaking things down to manageable chunks as it then doesn't feel so overwhelming.

bluesky45 · 03/12/2021 21:28

I downloaded an app called sweepy (it's free). It takes a little while to set it up but then it's so good. You input each room of your house and input each job for each room. The app does give you suggestions for each room type which speeds it up. So for example, you put in master bedroom and it suggests changing the sheets, dusting, hoovering for example. Then you say how often that job needs doing (it also suggests for this but you can change it to more or less frequently). And then each day you look on the app and it tells you which jobs need doing by having them in green, orange or red. And you tick them off which is very satisfying.
