Heavy periods

Looking for people in a similar situation

Over the last 5 years or so my periods have gotten heavier and heavier.

I currently have mefamenic acid on prescription but feel that although it's great it's just a sticking plaster. I literally live in fear of running out of the tablets or the doctor saying I can't have them anymore.

But at the same time I don't want to be on these for years until menopause.

I generally am confined to the house the first 1-2 days if I have any plans I'll cancel them. There was a rare occasion I went swimming on day 1 as the tablets work so well but it's normal like that.

I use a mooncup plus cloth pad and still leak a few times a day. At night I use the highest absorbance period pants (£25!!) Plus a mooncup and still leak through to the mattress.

It's ruling my life. The tablets help but it's still awful. My iron is fine but I take spatone anyway around my period time. My BMI is very high though so don't know if that a factor its almost 40.

I am a SAHM but am looking forward to going back to work but how can I have a job like this?

I want to ask for ablation. The doc wants me to try the pill which I have and it was awful. They also suggest the coil but it freaks me out. I can't have synthetic oestrogen

Any advice?

I started having very heavy periods a few months ago. I was prescribed tranexamic acid and had an ultrasound which showed adenomyosis. I am having a coil fitted next week as that is what the consultant recommended. Do you know what is causing your heavy periods? Why does the coil freak you out?

Progesterone only pill back to back. Totally sorted me. I hated flooding and taking tablets to control that. Much prefer taking mini pill no break

Ps, i am not going to have a coil and have been pressured to justify that!!!

No. No coil. Once they understand they cant tell you to get the coil then they give you the pill.

My GP said there was a range of treatments, starting with tranexamic acid going up through hormonal contraceptives to surgical treatments, and we'd start at one end and stop when we got to something which worked (which was the tranexamic acid for me.) She was very firm in her belief that no woman in this day and age should have her life ruled by periods - but not everyone has a GP who thinks like that, so you need to try and get one who does.

It helps if you can give an idea of flow,in terms of how often you have to change protection, and what you're using, any other (large clots are over the size of a 50p coin, apparently,) and any pain, flooding, nausea, vomiting. It sounds like you know all that.

We all react differently to the pill and so on, so there's going to be an element of try it and see, and sometimes you will have to try a few things till you get something which works. Good luck!

Thanks all. I have tried a progestogen only pill (twice) and within a few days I was a sobbing mess. It completely messed me up. I'm not putting my family through that again.

A coil just uurgh. I'm uncomfortable with the thought of something inside me. Plus the pain of getting it in and out. I'm terrified of smears after a traumatic birth.
