Nervous about resigning remotely

fedup65356 · 02/12/2021 09:22

I have been offered a new job and need to give notice either today or tomorrow - both days I WFH. Not back in office until mid week.

I am giving more than the required week's notice, out of goodwill more than anything, not because I want to stay a minute longer than I need to.

Really nervous about resigning, probably more so than I would be if I were in the office.

How do I go about resigning remotely? Never had to do this before! Do I wait until I see my boss or her boss is available online? Or simply email my resignation and follow up with a call? Confused

Either way my resignation is going to be a shock and they probably won't be best pleased!

Any advice welcome!

Call first, send follow up email or email with letter attached depending on what they say they need from you.

I will probably try and get my boss or her boss via messenger first, explain I need to speak to them. If they do have time for a call then great, if not explain I am resigning and send my letter in an email, mentioning I'm happy to discuss anytime or when back in office.

Just call, let them know and then email them your resignation.

I wouldn’t do it the other way around.

Definitely a call first then email. If they dont have time to speak then try again tomorrow?

If they're going to be 'off' about it, I'd just email to your boss & only give the required notice 💁🏻‍♀️ Have a wee break before starting your new job!

Congratulations on the new job 🥂🍾. Hope you enjoy it!!

I did this during lockdown and just waited for my boss to go on green on Teams. I chickened out at least 3 times though Blush

As a boss, I'd rather get the news by email followed by a teams call.

It let's me get a hold of my emotions, think through any counter offer, consult my boss and so give the employee a better experience than witnessing my shock, panic etc!

Just make clear in your email you are very happy to chat but wanted them to have a chance to digest the news before talking.

Your email shouldn't be your formal resignation, but a note saying you have a job offer and want to accept and would like to talk. Ie keep it brief.

Yes, call then email is what I did (my boss actually called me about something else as I was summoning up the courage so I did it then). Try not to do what my colleague did - he tried to call a couple of times before 9am and when he didn't get an answer immediately sent the email. I know he wanted to get it done, but I'd have at least given an opportunity for my boss to return the call!

I think it would be fine to message to request a catch up, pop it in their diary and then resign over the phone/video chat following up with your letter of resignation.

How did you get on?

@Bairnsmum05

How did you get on?
Completely nerve-wracking as but did it by initial online message that I needed to chat to her, then called shortly after, had the chat and then emailed my letter. They are disappointed but fine...will see how my notice pans out.

I feel absolutely nothing now It's done. No sadness, no happiness, no massive relief - just 'meh' and glad I got it over with.
