Failed driving test

Hi all , DS has failed his deriving test three times . He’s a good driver but just can’t do the test. If any of you have experience in multi fails how do I keep his spirits up ? He’s rather glum .

I feel your (and his) pain. DS has test number 4 next week. His instructor says he's ready and there is no reason for him not to have been successful. I think nerves get the better of him as he's failed on different things each time. We have agreed that if this is not successful we will leave it until after A levels.

Sometimes a change of instructor can help, even if the previous instructor is very good. A change of approach.

And more practice, if possible, between lessons, out with a family member or friend. Depends on the person, some people get confused if practising in one car and having lessons in another. And you have to be with the right person who will support what your instructor said and give you confidence.

If it's a problem with being tested itself, sometimes talking to a counsellor/coach about this can help.

Also suggest an eye test if glasses not already worn and tests up to date, as sometimes a very mild prescription for driving glasses can make a difference in judging distances, dazzle from lights etc. (even when within legal sight limits without).

Lots of other good tips from PPs too.

Took me a few goes myself (and a change of instructor and a bit of a gap before final test). An (older) relative took double that over the course of a couple of years, passed in the end.

Hi panicmode1
This is the same as my DS instructor says there is no reason he can't pass .
It's just horrible for him , he was so deflated after the third fail .
This thread has given me lots of tips and it's good to read the success stories after multiple fails

@qwertykeys thought I would update - DS passed at the 4th attempt this week!! I think he was much more relaxed because he was convinced he was going to fail, so managed to get through...Good luck to your DS.

Hi Passed on the fourth attempt Smile. Instructor gave him a mars bar before the test, he dressed smartly , got stuck in horrendous traffic , apparently the examiner diverted off route several times to try to get out of traffic and back to the centre so the test ran over time . Was told he passed before his instructor had time to sit in the car for the verdict .

Congratulations @Qwertykeys that's great news Smile my instructor wants to book my test soon, I'm 5 months pregnant so hopefully I'll get it done before baby arrives

Qwertykeys · 15/01/2022 19:21

Thanks chicken, good luck with your pregnancy and test . There is a backlog in our area for tests but have found the cancellation apps very good .

I’ve failed four times. My instructor said the same. No reason I can’t it’s just nerves. 5th attempt on Wednesday 😢

Qwertykeys · 15/01/2022 19:45

Thank you! Well done to your son!

I gave up. I have dyspraxia which is worse under stress. The alternative is to try something like Rescue remedy.

Qwertykeys · 15/01/2022 21:15

Hi gettingstuffed , I’m sorry you have given up , do you have to declare your dysphasia when you book ? Just wondering if you can get an extended test so you can explain your condition to the examiner and hopefully settle your nerves
