Inflamed eyelids - a reaction to something

I've had a reaction to either a couple of creams I'm using or I've rubbed my eyes with something on my hands and it's caused my eyelids and below my eyebrows to be really sore, red & swollen. They look and feel terrible.

I've stopped using the couple of creams I'm wary of but now I need to help my eye lids recover. I started using nipple cream which I thought was helping but it's still really bad.

What else can I try? It's really bothering me now. It happened at the weekend so it's early days but I just want some relief from the soreness and swelling.

Have you taken an antihistamine? Otherwise, any reaction to a cream you stopped using several days ago should have abated by now...? It could be something else.

violetbunny · 01/12/2021 07:07

Could it be dietary? I get that reaction from eating kiwifruit. Took me about 40 years to make the connection and realise that was the cause! For ages I thought it might be skincare, then hayfever.

Hogu · 01/12/2021 07:37

I've taken a antihistamine and used a cold compress on my eyes which has reduced the swelling a small bit. They are still really red and look terrible though.
I honestly don't know what else I can use on them to help?

Can you go to see a gp? Sometimes you might need a couple of days of steroids or something in addition to the antihistamines?

Hogu · 01/12/2021 07:52

It's the hardest thing to see my gp these days.
I might try a pharmacist, wonder if they could help?
Unfortunately we've got a Christmas experience day booked today so I'm going looking like I've been punched in both eyes. Great family photos that will be!

I wouldn't use anything on them tbh.

Go to a pharmacist or optician, they'll be able to help and advise. My optician sorted out my upper lid cysts and blepharitis (which is what the reaction swelling is called) with a couple of over the counter aids.

silentpool · 01/12/2021 08:38

I had a blocked pore on my eyelid and my whole eyelid swelled up. It took about a week to look normal again. But they won't give you anything for that type of thing.

H1Drangea · 01/12/2021 08:48

I had something similar , luckily I had an optician appointment ( convenient ) who said it was dry eye
She recommended some eye drops , bought over the counter from the pharmacy
They only cost a couple of pounds and I’m using them a lot
They’re called Hypromellose my eyes at one stage were so puffy and sore , I had bruising almost by my nose , the skin felt really dry , sore and stretched

I had this about three weeks ago. Literally looked like I'd been burnt under my eyebrows. Turned out to be something called retinol burn as I'd just started using it.

I avoided putting it on the eye area and put my usual moisturiser on first as it was making my whole face sting. I've now got used to it and my skin looks loads better thanks to the retinol.

Africa2go · 01/12/2021 09:00

Had similar reaction (mine was definitely skin care). My eyelids doubled in size so my eyes looked tiny and it was red all the way up to my eyebrows. Watered continuously.

Nothing I did made any difference, took about 5 or 6 days each time to look normal (I stupidly re-tried the same cream).

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/12/2021 09:20

I get sore eyes where the skin cracks and I find soap and glory eye cream is very helpful.

MmeCamenbert · 01/12/2021 09:44

Definitely sounds like an allergic reaction, this happened to me 18months ago when I became allergic overnight to anything containing Nickel and Cobalt. Make up, creams, make up remover, baby oil-literally everything! I had to have patch tests with a Dermatologist to identify the allergens. I used just water and cotton pads with an organic Olive oil linement as a moisturiser until I knew what I was reacting to. Good luck 🤞🏻

I’m in a skincare Facebook group and I’ve seen loads of people saying the same lately.

One person worked out it was the central heating causing hers. I think she is now using a humidifier and not putting the heating in in her bedroom.

La Roche Posay do a nice gentle eye cream especially for sensitised skin from allergies etc. I got it in Superdrug last week as I have allergies and the skin around my eyes was a bit sore.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 01/12/2021 09:50

I was told to get ‘Eye Bag’ by the optician, after I had cataract surgery. It’s a mask you heat in the microwave and it’s very soothing.

snowballer · 01/12/2021 09:51

Could be periorbital cellulitis (although I think it would be unusual to be in both eyes). I had it recently and my eyelid/under the brow swelled up and was painful and itchy. It's probably worth getting it looked at - antibiotics are needed for it. If it isn't, it's still worth being careful about any swelling around your eyes. I'm sure a pharmacist could give an opinion if you can't get to a GP.

Soontobe60 · 01/12/2021 16:51

I’ve had this - I use a hot cloth cleanser (superdrug), and then a thin smear of Vaseline around the eye and on the eyelid. It’s really helped.
