I stumbled across this on Facebook then got lost down a rabbit hole of googling. Now my logical brain tells me - ridiculous fad... but I can't stop thinking about having a bowel full of wriggly worms I need to expel!! Can someone talk some sense into me please before I poison/shit myself

Do not do this, it is tin foil hat madness. If you are worried you have parasites ring your GP.

Saz12 · 01/12/2021 01:08

Your intestines are full of poo. Right now. Full of actual, smelly brown poop (or what is about to become poop).

I think we’re probably meant to have bugs and nematodes and worms in our fur. (Ie we’ve evolved that way).

BleuJay · 01/12/2021 06:28

Basically it’s a laxative so you will be shitting lots more than usual and as a result your poo may look different to normal, mucus will also be expelled etc and you may think you have expelled parasites from your body when what you have actually lost is £££’s.

Having a good clear out may be beneficial but it’s certainly a parasite cleanse as these charlatans are suggesting.

BleuJay · 01/12/2021 06:30

Certainly NOT ^^

This. If you have a moderate worm burden it stimulates and maintains your immune system.

Staff doing colonoscopies see worms in human intestines.

We are designed to be riddled and filthy and a lot of modern issues stem from the fact we no longer are.

YourenutsmiLord · 01/12/2021 06:39

YOu need a healthy microbiome - it's not worms - I think they are seeing micropscopic pics of microbiome and thinking worms.

Forion · 01/12/2021 09:04

I've had threadworms twice and it's no big deal. You'd know it if you did have worms, so I shouldn't worry.

If you really want to drive yourself nuts look up Demodex Mites 😄

tintodeverano2 · 01/12/2021 10:41

Actually, evidence suggests that parasites in the bowel may be beneficial to bowel healing in those with inflammatory bowel disease. So don't get rid of any you may have!

StormTreader · 01/12/2021 10:53

There's even a scientific theory currently that we may be seeing a rise in auto-immune diseases because our immune systems are expecting to have to deal with parasites and are going a bit bonkers without any to fight!

Interesting if it eventually turns out to be true.

FlowerFlour · 01/12/2021 12:31

I did this at the start of the first lockdown. I was going to be at home and close to a toilet for a long time so thought I may as well, plus I have travelled a lot in developing countries so had more chance of having parasites than most people.

What are you using? I felt SHIT for 4 days while doing it; mostly nauseous, not really needing the loo much more than usual. At one point i tried to wipe smudged mascara from under my eye, only to discover it wasn't mascara at all; the skin under my eyes was just black. Shock After 5 days I felt much better though and continued the cleanse for the full 3 weeks. It didn't make a huge difference to my life, but if you're into trying new health things then you might as well; it can't hurt.

Carboncheque · 01/12/2021 12:32

I spilled the dog’s last Advocate treatment on my hand so I’m covered for ticks and fleas.

Seriously, stop watching shit. Literally.

FictionalCharacter · 02/12/2021 02:50

Another stupid American fad. realised how ridiculous this “parasite cleanse” stuff was when I heard about so-called ropeworms. People are purging their guts with all kinds of horrendous stuff and saying the “worms” they expel are proof that it works. These “worms” are actually strips of your bowel lining. The purging is damaging your gut.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rope_worms

Don’t do it! Humans don’t need regular worming like dogs and horses, because we eat hygienically and don’t pick up worm eggs from contaminated soil. If we do get worms of any kind there are safe, effective treatments that don’t tear the lining off your gut.

SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 02/12/2021 02:54

If there was something living in your bowels that was doing you harm, you would know about it, and the way to deal with it would be to speak to your GP.

Don't waste a load of money on these kinds of products. They are snake oil. Utter bollocks.

TwoShades1 · 02/12/2021 02:58

If you have genuine concerns that you may have parasites or worms (ie from travel). See a health professional. Anything you can buy and do at coke without medical guidance probably isn’t that safe. People often say that they passed worms but that’s actually some of their intestinal lining from the stuff they are taken.

thisisnotagooduseofmytime · 02/12/2021 13:47

Ok thanks, you've convinced me it's nonsense 😂 I had absolutely no reason to think I might have worms apart from people on the internet saying 'everyone has these living inside the and they must be killed!'

A handy tip OP. Don’t whatever you do google demodex mites. No, honestly, don’t.

thisisnotagooduseofmytime · 02/12/2021 21:42

"Demodex mites typically come out at night when you’re asleep so they can feast on your dead skin cells before retreating to their hiding spots to lay eggs." 😐

OP posts:
randomcatperson · 03/12/2021 07:32

Demodex mites can't poop. They just fill up with the skin cells that they've consumed then die. When they die their bodies disintegrate and the bacteria inside are released and can live in the eyelids. This can cause a reaction and lead to blepharitis and eye problems. The bacteria produce a sticky substance that helps them live on the eyelid and you have to scrub the lids to break it down and get rid of the bacteria.

Mrbob · 03/12/2021 07:46

Absolute nonsense

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/12/2021 07:51

One thing you can do is add raw pumpkin seeds to your salads. Worms hate them, apparently.

Otherwise, I really wouldn't do anything. And I live with dogs who love sleeping on the sofas and my bed.

Gargellen · 03/12/2021 07:52

Demodex mites are normal to have. We get reactions to them only when our immune system is compromised but under normal circumstances their number are kept within normal range by our immune systems.

It is recognised that some forms of rosacea is actually Demodex mites out of control and in pores they have no business being in.

We are not designed to be sterile. We need bugs and critters to keep us in normal range.

thisisnotagooduseofmytime · 04/12/2021 22:50

As much as I tell myself that, I'd definitely still prefer nothing living in/on me!
