The price of food

It has just gone up so much hasn't it. My weekly shop is approaching double what it used to be. It must have reached the point where it's causing real hardship and making people have to change what they eat. I know some can't afford food at all (and I do donate to food banks) but even for those who can, it's got harder. There must be so many now under a significant amount of pressure with fuel going up and Christmas coming Sad

Maybe recently but in general food is cheaper than it has been in the past.
There was an article recently in the Guardian pointing out how much meat for example used to cost and how much it should cost now (with the rise in salaries etc.)
I think it is more expensive in general as peoples habits have become more luxurious (Snacks and deserts every day, meat at least twice a day,the portions of meat are bigger per person than suggested serving etc...)
I understand that this question was aimed at very recent times but bearing in mind how unhealthy most peoples diet is and how little we cook nutritious meals perhaps its not for the worse .Our bodies and enviroment could do with cutting back on some of the foods we consume daily.

Hmm but we've been talking about people who can't afford decent food or any food, or to feed their kids Sad

Sadly as someone who grew up very poor I can tell you that is a many faceted problem that wouldnt be answered by simply keeping the food costs down (there is a domino effect there). As a society we should all aim to help the root causes not the symptoms.

Tbh the reason why a lot of diets are unhealthy is rarely because people are eating too much protein/meat. Actually a lot of people are not eating enough proteins and are fulling up on carbs instead, because THEY are cheap.
The big difference between now and let’s say the 1950 isn’t that much the amount of meat. It’s the fact that people didn’t rely in processed food in the way we do now. People cook ‘from scratch’. Etc….
They might have had cookies and cakes but they were home cooked etc…. (And the reality is that you don’t crave more cookies when they are home made than you do with shop bought ones)

The problem here? It’s cheaper to buy frozen sausages, mass produced than a steak or even minced meat. You need the cooling facilities (everyone then had somewhere to cook!), you need to be able to pay for the gas/electricity etc etc

39p for 4 in sainsburys, and that's one of the more expensive supermarkets.
