Sick of my kids saying there's "nothing to eat"

I have four kids, three of them teens, and I'm sick to the back teeth of them saying their hungry, but "there's nothing to eat".
My cupboards and fridge are never empty, I always have;
Bread
Milk
Cereal
Pasta
Eggs
Cheese
Beans
Tuna
Veg
Fruit
And loads more stuff besides!
My 15 year old ds is the worst for this- yesterday he said he was hungry, I asked him what he wanted, and he said "there isn't nothing in the house", so I offered him; cheese/beans/egg on toast, pasta, chips, sausage, egg, beans and hash browns, noodles- he didn't want any of those things so skulked off to his room.
I buy snacky things like crisps, biscuits and sausage rolls, but they eat them all then complain.
I don't remember being like this as a child- if I was hungry between meals I'd have toast.
I'm not sure where I'm going wrong really, I just find it really annoying and a bit sad that they moan about "no food", I grew up not having luxuries like crisps and biscuits, we just had the basics, and I try my best to make sure they have plenty of food.
Does anyone else's kids complain like this?

When you say you offered your kid all those things, I hope you weren’t going to cook them for him too because he sounds spoilt enough to be honest.

I hear this daily and it really pisses me off.
As other posters have said i it means that there is no junk in the house

mineofuselessinformation · 29/11/2021 20:22

I'd be tempted to stick pieces of paper with a list of the usual contents on all cupboard doors, fridge and freezer and then say 'go and look!'
You'll have made a point they don't get to argue with, and they can strop off or make something as they choose. Grin

It's like she craves variety and expects new exciting foods every day, something different to try each time she fancies a snack. It's not possible to stock the fridge in that way, I need her to use up what's there.

You have my sympathy, this is my DD too. She loves going into M&S and picking a ready made salad, but wants different things every time. I don't have the money to eat like that! She hates toast. She wants a fridge full of nice fresh foods but can't get her head round the fact that most things have a 3 day shelf life so we I can't get in a vast choice. Feel a bit guilty as she actually would eat healthier if she could have what she wanted.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 29/11/2021 20:25

They want crisps, pies, sausage rolls, doughnuts, chocolate bars etc

Don't give in, they won't starve as there is plenty of good food in your house, it just isn't what they want.

A friend of a friend was complaining recently that her 3 DC would get through a 12 pack of crisps a day so she was forever going back to the supermarket for more because they complained of there weren't any. My jaw nearly hit the floor. No apologies whatsoever If that person is reading this.

. I'm lucky my 4yo still thinks a hot cross bun or peanut butter toast is a treat ! I guess I have all this joy to come... I thought kids were meant to get easier/more rational!!!

Where on earth did you get that idea from ?! Grin

Goldbar · 29/11/2021 20:50

@RockingMyFiftiesNot. I had fond hopes of a respite once we were through the "hoicking a 14kg deadweight having an almighty tantrum up from the supermarket floor because they want a(nother) Paw Patrol toy" stage! Silly me...Grin.

Skyll · 29/11/2021 20:54

Yup. It’s a teen thing. They grow out of it.

I'm like this and I'm in my thirties Grin

I’m 31 and I’m still disappointed when I find only ingredients in my fridge instead of snacks Grin

I hate cooking and I have ADHD so I chase a dopamine hit through easy to grab junk food Blush

The main thing I can see from these posts is that there are lots of carbohydrates (both bread and veg/fruit based) - but not a great deal in the way of savoury protein. There is some, but not anywhere as much as there is carbs. And teenagers in particular, can crave a lot of protein; they're busy growing ridiculously tall and putting on muscle almost as fast as a bodybuilder.

When I've got that raging hunger thing going on, what sorts it is cooked meats and seafood, so things like a spicy cooked chicken thigh or chilli salmon/prawns or cheese, deli meats and black olives with some salad, not an apple and a petits filou or a bowl of sugary cereal.

CurlsandCurves · 29/11/2021 21:28

Same here. DS was moaning yesterday there’s nothing to eat, there’s no snacks.

I’m going food shopping tomorrow, what would you like to have as snacks that I don’t already buy? The response? I don’t know. Well if you don’t know what you want, how can I buy it??
