Driving and dyspraxia

Feeling a little despondent. Back from my first day of a 5 day intensive driving course, and my dyspraxia is making it really hard. Struggled badly with junction turns and spacial awareness, also finding it really hard to think of so many things at the same time.

Any other dyspraxic drivers out there? Any success stories would be greatly appreciated

Do you have to declare this to DVLA?

I just wish people who shouldn’t drive didn’t have to and there were much better public transport solutions tbh. It’s all very well saying “ persevere” but these stories of crashing and driving into things give me the fear. Someone drove right into me on a junction, wrecked my car and sent my insurance through the roof. Thankfully they didn’t kill anyone. Lots of people can’t drive or shouldn’t drive, and that should be ok.

Currently not.

I don't think being dyspraxia automatically means being a terrible driver - it varies between people and even over lifetimes how it affects people - plus being aware of potenatil issues may make for more cautious and defensive drivers overall.

Dyspraxic here (wish I’d known it back then as I just thought I was bloody stupid Sad)
I passed third time. I don’t find it easy, if I don’t drive for a while it takes me a while to get the hang of it again. I’ve never been in a crash but in the early days I had a close shave or two. I’ve scraped my car and someone else’s while parking but that’s easily sorted out, not worth getting too worried about. Automatic and parking sensor helps but I managed without for many years. It’s totally doable but I know my limits and I don’t drive in inner cities and towns unless it truly can’t be avoided and I don’t park in places where there isn’t loads of space. It’s totally doable, you just adapt to what you know you can manage well enough and avoid what is likely to be a problem. The hardest part is the aggressive, condescending and judgement from other drivers who think people shouldn’t be on the road unless they can drive like Damon Hill.
