Man from BT knocking on my door- is this worth reporting?

Working from home today and midday there is a knock at the door. When I answer there is a male in his late 20s, clean and tidy, wearing no uniform, but a high vis vest. He is carrying what looks like an ipad.

He did not introduce himself, but said that there was no need to panic and that he was asking how my broadband had been behaving recently. He said there had been several complaints from neighbours in the area and asked who my provider was. I replied that I had had no problems and that my provider was BT.

He then went on to say that he worked for BT and that the reason I hadn't had issues was probably because I am with BT. I should add, I can come across as very authoritative ( a homeless person I bought breakfast for last month said this- it couldn't be further from the truth)

Anyway, I then go to close the door and he said, 'You have lovely eyes'. He had a foreign accent (maybe Scandinavian?) I just closed the door. I am very much a plain person, who never receives compliments on my looks, so was totally aware something was off.

I am now worried that he might be out to scam people and we have a number of elderly people living around here. Could this be the case and if so, who do I report it too. Know police have bigger fish to fry.

He probably did work for them. I get similar people knocking all the time. He'll be on commission. They use certain phrases and compliments to get you to find it hard to say no. I just say no thanks and shut the door.

thats way off
ring or email BT probable scam or distraction burgler
(i dont trust cold callers)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/11/2021 14:53

Sounds more like sales than a scam as such. All the door-to-door sellers here start with the fake concern about disturbing you, unnecessary reassurance about something you weren't worried about, and proceed to unwanted compliments (eyes or accent can be used on anyone). He probably wanted to up-sell you.

Yes it sounds dodgy OP. I would report it to BT and ask them to confirm if they had someone working in your area today.

Thank you all. I just found it odd that as soon as I mentioned that I was with BT he backed off. He did not have any ID with him though to say he was with BT and made the fake compliment after I had practically shut the door on him. Just worried he may have been up to no good and possibly a would-be burglar.

If he worked for bt surely he'd already know you were a customer?

Coldenoughforyou · 29/11/2021 14:59

Report it to BT and they will probably tell you to inform the police.

Coldenoughforyou · 29/11/2021 15:01

The police turned up straight away to see my elderly parents when they were scammed by a caller from ‘EON’ and they gave them a direct number to ring if it happened again so I think they would be interested.

TellySavalashairbrush · 29/11/2021 15:26

Thanks again. BT have advised I call 101 and let police know. They said no way was it one of their people.
