Months of issues with my dentist and now this!

In the summer one of my upper teeth lost a piece of filing.
I had an appointment in August with my dentist. She built the filing up by placing one of those metal ring things over my tooth. She struggled to remove it when she was finished but as I was numb I didn’t feel any pain. However, after it wore off it was very uncomfortable as though my gum had been cut. DH had a look and said he could see a definite cut in the gum inbetween the two teeth. It was quite uncomfortable, I made an appointment to have it checked (three weeks later as they are always so booked up).
By then it was getting very painful especially if food lodges in there.
Attended my appointment and was told the computer system had crashed so there was little they could do. I told the dentist that I thought she had cut my gum but she denied this and said it was the position of the tooth and food was getting stuck there (I have never had this issue before and it has been filled for several years). So due to system crash I then had to wait another few weeks for an available appointment. That resulted in weeks of more pain, tried getting a cancellation but nothing.
I attended the appointment a few weeks ago, the dentist said she would do what she could to temporary fill it. Still denied it was cut even though the pain when food in it was unbearable at times and has kept me awake. The temp filing has since fallen out.
She only works part time and is also doing a part time uni course so her appointments are few and far between, they won’t book me in with anyone else and all other local dentists are full so I am stuck with her.
Booked the nearest appointment which was mid December (this was back in October). I asked if they could ring with a cancellation if any came up.
Luckily a cancellation came up for tomorrow. I have waited now for several weeks for it.
So on to today, I was on my way to a hospital procedure. The dental receptionist calls , ‘Sorry but your dentist is having childcare issues for tomorrow (won’t actually know till the morning) and there is a strong possibility she will have to cancel your appointment, so can you come down to us in an hour, today she will see you then!’
I explain that I am on my way to the hospital and can not make today. I asked if it is cancelled tomorrow when will it be moved to? Mid January.
I said that wasn’t good enough, I have been left in constant pain due to her last work and I simply can not wait till next year. I asked if there are any other dentists who can see me. I was told no and then the receptionist had the cheek to say ‘Well I am offering you this appointment today but you’ve turned it down!’
Surely, my dentists childcare issues should not be my concern. I’m now going to have to be in pain all over Christmas, if a cancellation doesn’t come up.
I have rung around all local dentists and only private ones are taking on patients. I can’t afford private dental care.
What the heck do I do now?

Could you ring the dental practice back and ask to speak to the practice manager? Explain everything you've detailed here. Really sorry to hear you're in such discomfort, it sounds awful. And very stressful trying to get it sorted.

Say you'd appreciate a second opinion by a different dentist as there is definitely a cut in the gum that wasn't present before your dentist began her treatment. This cut is not getting any better and it is causing you ongoing pain.

A cut in your gum would have healed by now. Its possible the band would have made a small cut in the gum but it would have healed up after a couple of days. What are you using to clean the food packing?

I also don't see what else the dentist could do. They've give you notice that they no have to cancel your appointment tomorrow, offered you an alternative appointment today which you've declined.

Your best option if you are having pain and cannot access your own dentist is to get an emergency dental appointment with another NHS dentist. They will be available, it depends on your area but most areas either have an emergency dental service you access through 111 or a emergency dental Centre.

The cut is opening every time food gets in there. The dentist advised I clean the area with dental brushes and use cortisol but they don’t help with the pain once the cut has been opened again. I have tried 111, their advice was to ring all my local dentists which I have but they are ot taking NHS patients, Because of Covid they are seeing less patients per day due to distancing and extra time needed to clean between each appointment. If it was just a general check up I wouldn’t be so annoyed but they have messed me about several times and offering me an appointment with less than an hours notice is not good enough especially as the cancellation is down to childcare issues, that should not be a patients/customers problem.

Equally.... your inability to make the sooner appointment offered isn't their problem!
I second that the cut would have healed by now, this sounds like food packing due to the new filling being a different shape to the other one. Flossing and interdental brushes after eating to shift any lodged in food will help.
You seem to want private standard treatment on an nhs basis.
"I am stuck with her"
You're really not.

CarrotSticks19 · 29/11/2021 15:34

That sounds really unusual OP. It sounds much more likely to be food packing, especially with your symptoms. Gums heal well.

If you really think it's a cut that's repeatedly opening what I'd advise is a completely soft, no chew diet for 2 weeks, so nothing can get lodged in there. Then warm salt water mouthrinses 4 times a day, gently holding it over the cut for 4 minutes. If there is a cut that's repeatedly opening the above will allow it time to heal. You can use some difflam or anbesol gel on the area to provide pain relief.

You need the NHS emergency dental service if you are having pain. Not a practice taking on patients. There will be an emergency dental service in your area.

At the end of the day if the dentist is having childcare issues what are they supposed to do? Bring the child into the surgery and have them sit and watch? They have tried to find a solution for you, childcare issues aren't predictable especially right now with covid its very easy to need time off school with no one is willing to care for them.
