Huge stain on new coat

I'm so annoyed with myself. I got my coat wet in the snow yesterday - it's a babywearing one with an extra panel and I love it. I popped it in front of a fire in the pub to dry it off before we walked home. The pocket had my lip balm in (base of coconut oil) and it melted all through into a huge round stain. I washed it as per the instructions but it's still there. I'm so pissed off because it's new, was expensive, and I wear it every day because it's so practical. DS lives in the sling and hates the pram.

Does anyone have any stain removing tips before I go mad? It's a parka (Parker) style coat and mainly polyester.

I have had success with alcohol hand gel almost dissolving and disappearing an oily stain. Try a tiny bit? Rub in cautiously you don't want to disturb the surface overly leave to dry.

Thank you! Will give it a try. Feel so irritated with myself. I always forget lip balm and end up with sore lips. The one bloody time I remember!

Take it to a dry cleaners

Washing up liquid
Thank you! Going on the list to try today! I'm going to try everything until something works or I give up entirely. 😂

Rub in washing up liquid to emulsify the oil then wash again

That's my last option, definitely. I mainly wanted to try at home because I need to use it to go out and about with DS, but if all else fails I'll try a dry cleaners!

You need to break down the oil in the balm.
Ariel Gel or similar, leave on the stain for a few minutes & rinse off.

JustLikea · 29/11/2021 11:30

They have special sprays and chemicals they use on various stains

bloodywhitecat · 29/11/2021 11:30

Cover the stain in bicarb or cornflower before washing to absorb any excess oil, leave for about 15 minutes before shaking off. Good luck.

JustLikea · 29/11/2021 11:31

I would contact the manufacturers and ask for their advice and who knows maybe they'll replace it if they're feeling generous

EinsteinaGogo · 29/11/2021 11:31

How bloody annoying OP ☹️☹️

If all else fails - customise it with a patch or contrasting fabric over the stain.

If you're not handy with a needle, a seamstress can make it look purpose made.

I find washing up liquid rubbed in with a toothbrush very good for getting out oil stains.

FolkyFoxFace · 29/11/2021 11:40

Thank you, everyone. Going to work my way through these today. I could kick myself, I really could! Such a daft mistake!

Dabitoff was a fabulous solution for greasy stains, I’m not sure if you can still buy it?
Stain Devils are amazing too.

Definitely washing up liquid!! I used to do the washing for someone who worked as a waitress in an upmarket Italian restaurant. Her work blouses were silk and always had olive oil stains after a shift. After trying every single 'gentle' stain removing tip there is, to absolutely no avail, I braced myself and tried rubbing Fairy into a stain before handwashing with Woolite. Stain gone, blouse fine. Always used it after that for oil based stains - it's brilliant!

FolkyFoxFace · 29/11/2021 22:00

Update - the washing up liquid worked a dream! First thing I tried as it's all I had in, and I'm so pleased! Coat was from Seraphine so I did NOT fancy shelling out for another one. I'm absolutely ecstatic! Thanks all!

Magic Eraser. It got a water tide mark off Ugg's

RampantIvy · 29/11/2021 22:32

Great news

FlibbertyGiblets · 29/11/2021 23:10

Yay!

RiverSkater · 29/11/2021 23:32

Elbow Grease is amazing for any oil stain. Spray, leave to soak in then wash.

JustLikea · 30/11/2021 09:19

That's good to know. Glad it worked OP

hennaoj · 30/11/2021 20:27

Would washing up liquid work on an oil based stain on something that's already had a wash?
