stone age costume?

My younger 2 are having a "stone age day" at school this week and need to dress up. I have loads of dressing up stuff from my older dc but nothing remotely stone age like. All the costumes I've seen are expensive and also much too skimpy for a day at school in december with all the doors and windows open.

Also younger dc has a paediatrician appointment during the day and I'd rather not take him looking too "authentic" (ie ragged clothes and grubby looking). Any ideas?

What an odd choice for a December day!

Have you got any animal print fabric at all, leopard scarf, zebra pillow case etc?

I’d be tempted to ignore the dressing up for the one going to the hospital appointment!

The 'Stone Ages' are divided into three* so go for the latest one (Neolithic) which effectively overlapped with the Bronze Age and the origins of stratified societies and early civilisations.

In other words - textiles.

*Paleolthic, Mesolithic, Neolithic. (Old, Middle, New.)

I would buy two lengths of fake fur big enough to wrap around the children. Dress kids in normal plain clothing and wrap fake fur round them in some way. Belts helpful, I imagine. Do not overthink or spend too much money. If buying fake fur is too expensive, try fleece?

When I tried to buy fake fur for a costume it turned out to be really expensive. Do you have any time for a trawl round your local charity shops? If there's an adult size animal print jumper or top - cut the arms off and it makes a good Stone Age tabard for a child. I also found a large furry cushion cover which I cut up to use instead of the fake fur I'd planned to buy. Any grey, brown or black t-shirt/leggings would look ok for stone age as well. A man's t-shirt with the sleeves cut off, and a fabric sash, also makes a good tabard.

When ours did this, I had the furry lining from an old coat for one outfit, a fur gilet for the second, and some printed fabric swathed around with a belt for the third.

Any hessian type fabric/ fake fur, in swathes.
If you have a Halloween skeleton, take some bones from that for jewellery and hair.

Any brown coloured wrap or scarf you have may be useful.
Feathers for the hair?
Fingerless gloves for the cold.
Boots with fabric wrapped round.

Leggings and long sleeve top both plain and in the same colour, black, grey or beige and then a furry adult sized gilet bought cheaply on eBay to wear as tabard.
