Hangovers really bad- advice

I already suffer from headaches which are managed by nerve blocks but these headaches are different- I get awful headaches from drinking alcohol.
These happened before my nerve blocked headaches and seem very random.
So if I have two beers I can have a day long headache with no let up that will not go with pain killers. I seem to be able to have wine with foood but not much. I think pale beers give me worse headaches. Id like to be able to have a few beers during the week without a day of horror..any insights?

Sorry if it seems too obvious, but surely you should be giving up the alcohol?

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 28/11/2021 22:54

Yeah - you can't drink beer then if it does this. Either try a different drink - vodka maybe? Or just don't drink alcohol at all - plenty of people don't.

You can develop a sensitivity to alcohol or the ingredients of specific drinks after years of ingesting them. My mum can no longer drink rose wine because she breaks out in hives.

I think you need to stop drinking it if it’s making you that ill.

Mum0509 · 28/11/2021 23:02

Beer and wine have histamines which you can develop an intolerance to. Gin and vodka might be better.

WeAreTheHeroes · 28/11/2021 23:02

My insight is that you should switch to alcohol free versions of drinks. Life is too short to be suffering like that. Do you generally make sure you have plenty to drink during the day? It's possible you are dehydrated and alcohol is making this worse.

Yes, why do you drink if it makes you feel so bad?

Janeandjohnny · 28/11/2021 23:55

Thanks for both posts. Sorry I should have clarified. Its like Russian roulette- I can drink a few glasses of wine with food and its fine, sometimes I can have two or three beers and its also fine or it can be awful. Its quite random so hard to judge. I drink so little that if I was meeting a friend for a pizza I would like to be able to two beers or even one. It can go either way so there must be another factor at play. Dehydration- Im usually fine I think. Maybe tiredness? Late night?
I did give up completely once which was fine. Right now in a month I might only have 6 drinks in the whole month as Im wary of pain.

Histamines is interesting angle, gin and vodka are good suggestions to try too.

@claymodels because I guess its so random, not all the time. It would be different if it happened every time or if it happened after lots to drink. I also live in hope that I might find an alcoholic drink that does not do this but not drinking is very attractive too.

janeandjohnny how old are you? I'm 52 and can't drink anything like I used to be able to. Max of one large glass of wine or a home made (probably large double) gin and tonic before I get hot sweats and headaches. 10 years ago I could polish of a bottle and a bit of wine no problem and several g and t's. I also can't mix anything eg glass of champagne on arrival at an event then wine with dinner will see me vomiting - even one glass of wine. Also can't do one g & t then a glass of wine.

Janeandjohnny · 29/11/2021 17:38

@blobby10
Thanks for your post. Sounds like me. I do not vomit though! I am 48 and definitely gets worse with age I think. I definitely think twice about the drink before I drink it!

There's a thread under Allergies that might help

Could it be menopause or hormonal? Before my HRT I never knew if I’d have a bad hangover or not.

quinin · 29/11/2021 20:31

I was like this so stopped drinking altogether a few years ago. What I've realised since is I think it's related to over all body toxicity, hence why it varied.

By toxins I mean environmental, pollution, pesticides, chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, medication, just the stuff we are exposed to every day which accumulate as we get older.

Have you tried doing a detox to clear the liver?

TheVolturi · 29/11/2021 20:34

The only thing I can drink these days is brandy. Wine gives me palpitations, beer just bloats me, gin and vodka similar to wine. But a small brandy is almost like a medicine to me! Makes me feel so chilled and sleep like a log.

underneaththeash · 29/11/2021 20:38

I’m a similar age and quite a lot of my friends no longer drink as it makes them unwell.
I’d experiment with different drinks.

Journeylikenomother · 29/11/2021 21:39

I haven't drank beer in years - as little as one or two would give me the most awful nauseating headaches. Cider is fine (and lots of nice ones out there now) as is gin or vodka. wine can go either way. Whiskey is a total no no! You just need to try different things

WeAreTheHeroes · 30/11/2021 20:12

You don't need to do a detox to clear the liver. If your liver wasn't functioning properly removing toxins from your body you would have other issues, not only hangovers from drinking alcohol.

makelovenotpetrol · 30/11/2021 20:26

Don't drink. Simple. Is it so important to your life to drink that you'd play "Russian roulette" as to if you'll get terrible hangovers or not? Why do you feel the need to drink if that's the risk?

I dont feel the need to drink. I feel the need to find out why I randomly get hangovers from two drinks. Im happy not to drink as I mostly dont but maybe theres a drink I can enjoy sociably without feeling awful afterwards.

Try organic Prosecco, make sure it's organic, the normal stuff gives me headaches.. It's the only thing I can drink these days that doesn't give me a headache. If I drink 2x vodka and tonics I'm in bed by 9 with a horrid headache.

Boood · 30/11/2021 21:35

Is it the quality of the drink? I often find a small amount of cheap rubbish makes me feel awful the next day, but I can be fine after several glasses of good wine.

Thank you. I used to be a wine dealer a long time ago!!! I have all my WSET Training etc so I have skipped about trying lots of different wines. I think wine with food is usually ok but beer and other drinks = dodgy. I drink so little wine I make sure its nice.

I find the effect alcohol has on me varies with my menstrual cycle.

I enjoy a drink, that's why I have one occasionally. It definitely helps to be well hydrated before you start and I think a pint of water with a Berroca before bed helps too but that may be the placebo effect

A run in the morning is the best way to shift the headache
