Talk to me about leatherman tools

I'd like to buy DP a multitool for Xmas. Happy to spend iro £150. It's a bit of an extravagance as he doesn't NEED it. He's a carpenter by trade although just taken a job "off the tools" so this is for camping, bits and bobs type thing.

Are there equivalents or better buys within this price range?

He really likes knives (not as weapons of course) and that type of thing.

I was bought a Leatherman when I joined the Police 15 years ago, I've used it for so many things within the job (and it is still going strong and looking pristine after all these years!). My dad also has a Leatherman which my mother bought him, which he takes with him on holiday when they go caravanning/driving across France/Spain and he has used it countless times.

I would say they are a worth while investment in those sorts of scenarios but maybe not so much as a carpenter if he has all the tools? Could it be an 'outside of work' tool that he might appreciate?

My mum got my dad's engraved also which is a nice touch which might make it a more special present for your DH?

Yes, we camp a lot and would be used for that I'm sure. I've just found one that can be engraved which has swayed it for me.

Gerber are another quality brand very similar to Leatherman. They both have a variety of models, so it depends what tools he will need on it.

(Disclaimer; I work in an industry where many of us own at least one multitool. However, some of the 'older hands' are disparaging about multitoools, saying they don't do any job well, you need a proper screwdriver/knife/saw/pliers.)

Must be an "older hand". I've had one for the last 10 years, still in it's original packing, unused. Jack of all, I don't think, certainly a master of nothing (apart from collecting dust!)

I always have a leatherman in my handbag. It has been useful on countless occasions.

No expert here at all, but just bumping for you, and for my own interest.

We have a friend who is an AV technician, who once told me that his most useful tools were his Leatherman and a Sharpie. All the significant men in my life have had an engraved leather man for their 21/40 they birthdays since, different models defending on their interests.

I had a Leatherman Wingman, it was great and much better than cheap rubbish ones I'd had before. Sadly I lost it. I've now got one from Lidl which is alright but not premium.

Agree with a PP that Gerber are also well regarded. And there's the Victorinox swiss army knives.

I’ve had an older version of these for 25 years. Beat thing a girls can own.
