Would this laptop be ok for school work, and Minecraft?

I'm not very tech savvy, but think it would be ok?

My only concern is it says the processor is Intel Core i7, but it doesn't say which generation that is.

This one has a 10th gen Intel® Core™ i7 processor

The newest generation is 11th, so I assume 10th is good :)

It's pretty much impossible to buy a new laptop that does not meet those very undemanding needs you've given it, so yes it will do them fine.

Screen size, portability, robustness etc. are really what's important differentiators for new laptops if all you're using them for are those.

An 8 or 10 year old refurbished PC will do those things without real compromise.

More than good enough for school work, I'd say. If you're just talking about things like essay writing and internet researching, you could get away with something a lot cheaper smaller and less powerful.

I don't know what kind of device you need for Minecraft, though.

lucysmam · 28/11/2021 21:18

Will dd1 be able to play other games on it? Minecraft's their main requirement but she would like to play Valerant(sp?) too & sometimes streams from Twitch.

I'm hoping that spending a bit more, will mean it'll last longer too - but I have no idea if laptops work that way!

Laptops and other devices usually need to be replaced because the tech or operating system has been superseded, not because they wear out. Spending more won't help you there.

This one is already out of date - newer machines will have Windows 11 ready installed. That's probably why this one is reduced.

Nothing wrong with Windows 10 though, if you/she are not bothered about having the most up to date system. I'm still using a laptop that runs Windows 8.1, and it's perfectly OK for what I use it for.

It can be worth spending more to get more storage space, depending on what you want to do with it. You might want the extra power for streaming, as well. You really need someone who knows about gaming to advise you on that.

Will she need or want to carry it around with her very much? A 15.6 in screen is quite a big thing to hump around. 10-12in is better if she's carrying it around, and should be perfectly adequate for schoolwork - but she might want or need the bigger screen for gaming.

It’s in the drop down full spec

i7-1165G7

11th generation

Personally I’d go for the 14 inch version but this is a review of the larger one but with the i5 processor

ASUS VIVOBOOK 513EA

This larger-sized laptop has a 15.6-inch Full HD display, with 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution.

There’s a quad-core Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor and a generous 8GB of Ram, plus 256GB of solid-state drive (SSD), 185GB of which is available to use for storage.

It has both Bluetooth and wi-fi, with wired connectivity provided by two USB 2.0 sockets (one USB 3.0, one USB-C).

In addition, it comes with a full-sized HDMI output for connecting to an alternative monitor or TV, a headphone/microphone jack, plus a micro SD slot to take a memory card.

How fast is it and what’s it like to use?
It pretty much aced our benchmark performance tests. It flies through basic office tasks and web browsing, with plenty left to take on more resource-intensive tasks such as photo and video editing, though it doesn’t have the necessary graphics card for serious gaming.

This laptop loads simple websites instantly, with only a little lag when tackling more complex pages containing multiple images.

As this is a large laptop weighing 1.73kg, it’s not the best choice if you’re looking for a super-portable laptop to carry around with you all day. This one’s better suited to life on a desk.

Build quality is acceptable too, though there’s some minor flex in the screen and base.

What are the keyboard and touchpad like?
The keyboard is better than some we’ve seen and is easy to type on at speed.

The touchpad is good, too. The buttons have the right amount of travel and finger movements are pretty smoothly represented by the cursor motion on screen.

How good is the screen and webcam?
The display is fine, though it lacks a little contrast and colours are slightly washed out. Reflections aren’t an issue and the viewing angle is acceptable – stray too far off centre and the screen will dim somewhat, but it’s better than many of its competitors.

The webcam is disappointing – Skype images look very dark, noisy and lacking in detail. Meanwhile, skin tones take on an unnatural orange hue. The audio is in sync with the picture, but rather muffled.

How are the speakers and audio quality?
Sound quality from the laptop’s speakers is OK. Our experts thought the maximum volume level was good, but the audio was lacking in bass, with a harsh, tinny tone.

Plug in some good headphones and the situation improves, though the bass can come across as a bit overwhelming.

How long does the battery last?
Overall, the battery life is acceptable for a laptop of this size. You’ll get a reasonable 8.5 hours of video playback before it gives up the ghost. However, web browsing time is more limited, with the battery going flat in a relatively quick five hours and 22 minutes.

Spec-wise that's great. But there's stuff you can't tell from a spec sheet. Build quality - find reviews in a reputable publication or website. Picture, sound, and keyboard quality - see it in person or find reviews.

It won't handle demanding 3D games. But a lot of the esports-y stuff like Valorant, LoL, DOTA, etc actually has quite low requirements.

Don't get het up about Windows 11. It released not even 2 months ago.

AndSoFinally · 29/11/2021 14:13

It's not a gaming laptop so doesn't have particularly brilliant graphics, but you won't need that on a 14" screen anyway really. It'll be fine for what you want, OP

Octavia174 · 29/11/2021 14:25

11th gen iris xe on board graphics are better than most low end dedicated graphics cards, certain a lot higher than Minecraft requires.

That PC will do all you have said you want to do.

lucysmam · 29/11/2021 14:56

Thank you.

I was just having a cuppa after work then going to have another look around before ordering one.
