A broken jaw would be really painful, right?

DS flung his head back and up into my chin (was an accident) and now I feel like I can't properly close my mouth. If I really force it I can but it really hurts my ears, particularly on one side. Ive tried to eat but it's too uncomfortable. Guessing it's not too serious as it'd be excruciating right? 🙄

Sounds like a slight dislocation. Take some ibuprofen for 24 hours to take the swelling down.

Mine dislocates lots as I have TMJ issues! It pops back after a while of its own accord.

You should probably get that checked out in hospital OP, inability to close physically together is a sign of a fractured mandible.

I’d probably go to A&E and have it examined properly, I have TMJ and the thing that tipped it over the edge recently was my toddler flinging backwards and smashing into the side of my jaw with her skull.
I’m now on naproxen and paracetamol whilst I wait 2 weeks to be examined by the doctor. 🙄 I don’t have the time to go to A&E but wish I did!

Probably not fractured but does sound like a TMJ issue

www.nhs.uk/conditions/temporomandibular-disorder-tmd/

If that fits, NHS says to see a GP if:
you're unable to eat or drink
the pain is affecting your daily life
the pain is affecting your sleep
the pain and discomfort keep coming back

I’d call 111 if you can’t eat at all, if you can manage soft stuff I’d take painkillers and call my own GP when they open, unless you have a MIU local that might be an option seeing as it’s traumatic.

Agree probably just slightly out, but as it is your first time I would see someone and the sooner the better. One of my dc frequently has a jaw which goes out and we have been told to always come in ASAP. Or if you have private dental plan a dentist might be able to see you tonight and put it back in.

I broke mine ( xrayed so officially broken) and although it was painful it wasn't much worse than when I bruised my toe 🤷‍♀️
I'd definitely have it checked out though incase it needs attention

When DS had a broken jaw (rugby) aged abt 16, a small but clearly visible gap opened up between two teeth in his lower jaw, just above where the fracture was.
And yes, it was extremely painful for him, he was in tears, poor thing. Had to go to A & E, he was admitted and operated on the next morning. They put a small plate in his jaw.

When I broke mine it wasn’t super painful but I could feel the two pieces moving apart when I swallowed and my tongue pushed against my teeth. I also couldn’t chew properly as it all just felt wrong. (Still managed to dust a sandwich before I went to hospital though Grin)

🤣 still managed to dust off a sandwich 🤣 - legend!

I'm not in enough pain to warrant waiting in A&E for 8 hours, it's aching, I can't chew or properly put my teeth together on one side but I'm not sobbing in pain or anything. Will see how it is tomorrow.

I broke mine back in my mid teens when playing hockey. I spent several days in hospital with mouth wired together, liquid diet and needed physio.

‘Suggest see how you are after 48 hours.

If you can move the jaw it's not dislocated.

It's most likely just bruising of the joint, it's unlikely that sort of injury would break your jaw. However if you really can't get your teeth together (as opposed to being a bit sore) you should get it checked out as this is a sign of a broken jaw. In the meantime make sure you only eat very soft foods
