There's never been an Aldi near me but one has just opened that's a ten minute drive away.
I've heard really good things about Aldi - what's best to buy (and best avoided)?

OP posts:

Their baguettes and half baguettes are lovely. Crust isn't too hard but not soft. Perfect.

madisonbridges · 28/11/2021 17:42

Their Belgian buns and pains au chocolat. Such a reasonable price.

TreaslakeandBack · 28/11/2021 17:54

Used to go every week but now shop online.
I go now for:
Specially selected aged steaks
Washing tablets
Dishwasher tablets
Earl grey tea
Chicken thigh burgers - spicy
Wine
Pasta - filled and dry
Rice pouches
Chocolate

The wine is FANTASTIC

If they have it in recommend :
Jurancon Sec
Picpoul de Pinet
Riesling
Sparkling Grillo
Cremant de Jura

I like most of their stuff , avoid cleaning stuff ( I like my eco stuff, and most I find overpowering in fragrance), and most rolls seem very sodaary in taste.
Don’t drink, like their chocolate tho, and frozen stuff

Absolutely! I've just been to Aldi for my Christmas cake ingredients.
Craftycorvid · 28/11/2021 19:43

Oh, I get very excited by an Aldi visit!

Lacura! The skincare is great and brilliant value for money.
Chocolate, smoked salmon and antipasti in jars.
Stollen and the seasonal stuff
Really good coffee
The aisle of random sh*te - you literally never know what you will find. 😁

LivingDeadGirlUK · 28/11/2021 19:47

I really like the tomato an mascarpone stir in pasta sauce, the microwaved grains (quinoa and others, really tasty and great for a quick lunch with some feta and cherry tomatoes.) Jars of hotdogs. All the fancy cheeses which are great price compared to other supermarkets. Oh and the prosecco is great!

Yuledo · 28/11/2021 19:53

I pop in occasionally just to get the smoked gammon joint. Absolutely gorgeous boiled for a couple of hours. Much better than other supermarkets.

Dora26 · 28/11/2021 19:54

Specially Selected soups are lively - particularly butternut squash

Lemon drizzle cake to die for

Trail mix

Columbian ground coffee
Jaffa cakes
With wines stay away from the real cheapos and go top shelf Aldi price and you’ll get a really nice wine
All my other buys are mentioned by pp

Dora26 · 28/11/2021 19:55

*lovely not lively!

FatPatsCat · 28/11/2021 19:57

I feel so old, getting excited reading all your Aldi 'hauls' 😂

AwkwardPaws27 · 28/11/2021 19:59

Salmon wellington or the mussels in garlic butter sauce with a partbake baguette for a "posh" dinner on the cheap.

eleanoreleanoreleanor · 28/11/2021 20:02

I might live near you OP as we have just had one open up near us! Excellent thread, im off to buy some wine tomorrow Grin

YokoOnosHat · 28/11/2021 20:37

Their part-baked breads are good. The ciabatta especially.

GreenLunchBox · 28/11/2021 20:40

Wheel rims for your car!

GreenLunchBox · 28/11/2021 20:41

I've just discovered the frozen duck spring rolls. They are gorgeous!

ByThePool2021 · 28/11/2021 20:44

I went into there yesterday and they had a wooden yoga toy set and a wooden gym toy set. Complete with protein shaker and smart watch. I mean that is the ultimate child’s wish list isn’t it?

It's good for things like baking ingredients, cheese, butter, coffee, cooked meats etc. Fresh fruit and veg you need to check carefully. Processed food in general isn't great, I'd avoid their table sauces, pickles, pasta sauces etc, also biscuits, cereals etc not great either. We had a frozen pizza a while back that was absolutely horrible, the sauce was all sweet and artificial tasting.

bonfireheart · 28/11/2021 21:46

Someone mentioned rip off candles, we bought so e reed diffusers for £4 and they're great.

Batfinkwings · 28/11/2021 21:53

Definitely the rip off Jo Malone candles and reed diffusers.
All of the Moser Roth chocolate and Aldi own buenos.
Wine and champagne.
Lacura face creams and their rip off of simple face wash.
Aldi own version of Nakd bars and Fibre one bars and little cake things.
I like the Fabulosa range of disinfectants. They are like Zoflora but seem to have nicer scents.
Faux pop chips and Pringles.
I’m sure I’m missing a lot!

mnahmnah · 28/11/2021 22:02

Their version of Baileys is nice - Balleycastle.

Avoid their cereal.

reesewithoutaspoon · 28/11/2021 22:09

the curry sauces with the separate spices in the lid. really nice.
Steaks, real greek yoghurt, aged cheddar. honestly I find most of their ingredients are fine. its just some of the processed lookalikeys that can be a bit hit and miss.
the wines are good. love their cremant de jura for a bit of Christmas fizz.
